Ever Wonder Why Cop Cars Have Push Bars? Here’s A Video Example

(By Greg Rourke) – I was a truck driver for a while. The perception is big semi trucks can drive through anything, but reality is it doesn’t take much to reduce them to 80,000 pounds blocking traffic. Unless you have four wheel lockup drive axles ( Most highway tractors do not)  then even locking in the power divider gets you only two wheels working for you, and eight against you. Actually two sets of duals, but you get the picture.

Here we have the reason why Western states have chain up laws. Remote, mountainous highways mean sudden snowfalls that can paralyze traffic. There are chainup areas along the Interstates, and often signs warning truckers of weather ahead and that they must install their tire chains. I’ve never done it on a big truck, I only drove in the Midwest, but it looks like a supreme pain in the keister. It was hard putting tire chains on my Cub Cadet. This guy didn’t get the message, and forward motion has become impossible. Or has it? Correct me if I’m wrong, these look like California Highway Patrol officers in a pair of SUV’s coming to the rescue. They’ve done this before, clearly. A little shove and our trucker is again mobile and off to the next chain up area.

Here’s why cop cars have push bars –
