Lions Super Pull Of The South Coverage: Super Stock Diesel Tractors Blocking Out The Moon

Lions Super Pull Of The South Coverage: Super Stock Diesel Tractors Blocking Out The Moon

(Photos by Bryan McTaggart) – We promised you on-going coverage of the 2014 Lions Super Pull of the South this week and here’s our second installment. This time we’re taking a peek at the diesel powered Super Stock tractors that split fans and drivers between company lines like Super Stock does on the drag strip. Instead of Ford, Chevy, and Chrysler, there’s John Deere, International, and Case (primarily). These tractors have some of the most powerful diesel engines that you’ll ever see outside of tug boats and locomotives. We’re talking diesels that make thousands of horsepower, untold amounts of torque, and have such low gearing that the rear tires, the huge rear tires, see big mph during a pull.

The tractors provide some great theater for spectators as well. There’s the wheels up style that the typically use going down the track, there’s a visible driver inside a cage, and there’s a column of black soot about 60 feet in the air when all things are working right. It is important to note that diesel pulling trucks and tractors were definitely he first diesel “hot rods” on some level and they have only gotten more powerful from there.

Farm tractors on steroids. What’s not to like?
