Ram Trucks Will Remain Steel Through 2020. Will This Help Or Hurt Them?

Ram Trucks Will Remain Steel Through 2020. Will This Help Or Hurt Them?

The truck wars are just as nasty as the power wars for the manufacturers right now. Either you can out-tow the other or you can be the most economical, either way you can win. Ford produced their final steel F-series about a week ago and General Motors has acknowledged a move to aluminum as a construction metal as well. Ram, on the other hand, has decided to wait out the changeover and through good sources, has indicated that their trucks will remain steel through at least 2020.

This could play well into their hands, as many of the commercial buyers are hesitant to trust the durability of aluminum, and are certainly unsure of the cost of repairs. Sergio Marchionne told his investors that aluminum could be better used across other Chrysler models, easing MPG numbers on vehicles sold in better numbers. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Ram has the powertrains to handle the weight of steel.

Other than pure cost increase, there is no reason not to go to a lighter metal. Dodge is just back pedaling because they have nothing in place to compete, no testing, nothing. Ford has been experimenting with aluminum bodies since the early 90s with Taurus’. And selling aluminum body/bed f150sto oil refineries since 2010 as test mules.

Not at all correct, Chrysler has been using aluminum since the second generation LH sedans and they really pushed the limits with the Plymouth Prowler. While they may not be close to building a fully aluminum Ram, they certainly have experience with using aluminum body panels.

I thought a standard feature of Dodge was rust? Can’t get a fully loaded Dodge and not get the rust.
