Raminator Breaks Monster Truck Speed Record At Circuit Of The Americas

Monster trucks aren’t just for dirt arenas and this story will prove how much power and grace it takes to move 11,000 pounds with a 565 cubic inch HEMI during an attempt to set the “Fastest Speed for a Monster Truck” on Monday December 15, 2014.

Raminator is a monster truck sponsored by Chrysler’s Ram Truck brand that broke the Guinness World Records® record at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas.  Hitting a new record speed of 99.10 miles per hour, Raminator and driver Mark Hall secured the Guinness World Records title at 8:44 a.m. (CT), breaking the previous record of 96.8 mph.

As the fastest growing truck brand in America, the Ram Truck brand is a long time sponsor of the fastest Monster Truck, the Raminator. The Ram-sponsored monster truck lineup includes the 2014 Monster Truck Nationals Champion Raminator and Rammunition, sponsored since 2002.

In 2014, Mopar also introduced Mopar Muscle; the monster truck it sponsors. The entire line of monster trucks are owned and operated by the Hall Brothers Racing Team based out of Champaign, Illinois.  Raminator has been named Monster Truck Racing Association’s (MTRA) “Truck of the Year” a record eight times, while Mark Hall, driver of Raminator, has been named MTRA “Driver of the Year” nine times since 1996, and Crew Chief Tim Hall has been named MTRA “Mechanic of the Year” five times since 2006.

“Taking on the challenge of breaking a world record has been an experience we will never forget,” said Hall Brothers Racing President and Crew Chief Tim Hall. “With the support of Ram and Mopar, we continue to add to our achievements and are honored to now be a Guinness World Records holder.”

Ram Trucks chose Circuit of The Americas, a multi-purpose facility and 3.4-mile race track situated on 1000-acre site in southeast Austin, as the site for this attempt at the record. Throughout the year, the Ram monster trucks compete in races and freestyle events and tour the country, making appearances at dealerships to offer ride-alongs and car-crushing spectacles for hundreds of thousands of fans of all ages.

Cool stuff. Other than the coordination (and money) needed to make this record attempt, I don’t see this as a record that could stand for long given the capability of all the other trucks out there. If money/time/venue wasn’t an issue I’d think any one of a handful of Trucks on the circuit today could bust this record by 1-3 mph or more only to have the Halls turn a few knobs and take it back again (again, given no limitations on money, time, or venue). All this said, not sure you could chain me to that truck going 100mph. Maybe, but that much mass with those tires whirring and the engine screaming might be more than I could handle. What will we do when someone figures out a twin-turbo 640ci BBC in these things making around 4,000hp and they lay down a 9-sec 1/4 mile lap. What kind of parachute are you going to put on that thing and won’t it give the folks over at SFI a heart-attack…

If the engine restrictions ever get changed we might see that but for competition they are limited to a max of 575ci. Only run 10% overdrive on the blower. And I think they are limited to a 8-71 blower. Not sure if they change their setup for the record attempt or are given a rule by the record people that is has to stay legal for competition. There is a rule book on the monster truck associations website. If you were interested in there rules.

Monster truck fan here. No mutual rules across the board. Still. Yeah the 572 is pretty common. Regs need to be in the spirit of safety, not limitations on variety or innovation. NASCAR is loaded with this kind of thinking that has the cars looking all but exactly the same. DS enclosures, chassis tethers, RII, fire bottle, and all that jazz. I’d like to see some come out with 48″ terras and see what it will do. How much weight could you shave one of those down to and really drop the unsprung weight….? What’s next – minimum truck weight….?
How cool would it be if there was a mega truck that crossed over to the MT world for certain events and sat it on its ear with innovation and outside-the-box thinking.
