Doing It Right Or Doing It Very Wrong? This 1964 Mercury Park Lane Camper Is For Sale

Doing It Right Or Doing It Very Wrong? This 1964 Mercury Park Lane Camper Is For Sale

I was out of town with my family for the last few days and we got home really late last night. I was pretty sure that my exhausted state was causing my eyes to malfunction, sending images of a 1964 Mercury Park Lane with a slide in camper installed where the trunk should be. I then smashed my head against the wall a couple times, belted down a couple shots of bourbon, and had my wife hit me with a shovel to get things moving in the right direction and there it was…the same thing I had been seeing before. BangShifter Wade Lytle sent this Craigslist link to us the other day and I finally got a chance to sped some time admiring it today. We’d say that this was the vehicle for a discerning cult leader in the 1970s. You had the business up front where you could roll in the luxury and comfort of a big sedan and then there was the party room strapped quite literally to the ass of the car.

The rear suspension has to have been beefed up because there’s not much sag happening here. The thing sits shockingly level which could be a testament to the fact that all four corners of the suspension are completely shot to pieces and it is just as low as it can go. Rearward visibility is slightly limited by the massive slide in camper, and there are no towing mirrors on the car so seeing things behind you must have been deemed not necessary by the previous owner/operator of the land barge. There is some structure on the front of the car coming out through the grill which we suspect was a spare tire holder.

There’s a 390 under the hood, boosted power steering, overworked brakes, and all the comforts of home in the red interior. The thing doesn’t look like it has rotted badly or otherwise suffered much ill-effect from having the camper on it, but the photos don’t go into a whole lot of depth.

Would you rock it? Crush it? Run screaming from it when it rolled down your street?

This is going to sound crazy, but I want to watch Freiberger auto X(cross) it on a new episode of roadkill.

The WWII era produced a lot of guys handy with tin snips and metal screws, and home built campers (and trailers) were once a common sight. It looks light, about the right width to work with the car, and I can imagine some old guy travelling the land in that thing well into his years and enjoying the looks he got. He’s probably in a home somewhere now if he’s even still around, it would be fun to track the story down.

There should be a museum for that sort of thing…

There’s a boy around here that’s done the same thing with a 65 Fleetwood. It looked kinda funny at first but it just grows on ya.
