Before you go rolling your eyes and skipping this video give it a chance. This is completely mental and it is for reasons that you need to see to understand. We have no idea about the background of this race but basically what you will see is a pack of Caterpillar tractors ranging in size from the little Caterpillar 10 and 20 models up to some of the bigger covered machines of the day. They begin by racing over some of the most uneven ground we have ever seen.
Mind you none of these guys have so much as a rope tied around their waist to hold them into the tractors so the violent starts and stops throw some of them out of their still running machines! Guys get thrown clear but this is insanity. Later we see guys driving their tractors through structures and while this seems like a fun idea, THEY HAVE NO ROOF OR PROTECTION. One guy flattens a barn seemingly on top of himself so we’re hoping he was ghost riding his Caterpillar tractor when the structure fell over. Another guy clips the corner of a barn and brings it down with half of it stuck to the tractor trying to fall in on him!
The model 10 and 20 were produced in the late 1920s and early 1930s so this film has to date from right around then. With the sheer number of tractors involved in these shenanigans we’re guessing that the guys were all working on the same job site or something. This does not seem like an activity Caterpillar would have sanctioned at the time.
Think people were tougher back then? They were and this is yet more proof. Our extreme fun these days is cool but back in the day, you could have gotten killed and people would have shrugged.
