We have showed videos of tire inflation cages being tested before but this is the most violent test we have run into yet, mainly because of the huge size of the tire and the forces involved when it all comes apart. For those of you that have never worked around larger vehicles or trucks, a tire cage is an essential piece of safety equipment in any garage where big tires are getting inflated. Why? When large truck and equipment tires are inflated and suffer a failure of any kind, the results can be deadly for anyone in the vicinity of the incident. We know one guy who lost his sight and several other senses when one of these tires let go in his face. The cage contains flying parts and pieces. In this video the tire has a three piece rim and you can clearly see all three pieces hanging out after the failure. Had there been no cage, stuff would have been flying everywhere and that’s means virtually certain death in a small shop.
Realize that the tubing this cage is made of isn’t exhaust pipe thickness. These things are built tough and to prove that the video lists the weight of the cage itself, completely unloaded as 820lbs! That is a lot of steel and that is a lot of thick, large diameter steel tubing. When the tire explodes it bends and twists those tubes like a pot of spaghetti. While they bend and absorb the impact of the flying rim pieces, it is important to note that everything is contained.
We once saw a guy get fired right on the floor at work for filling a tire with it leaning up against the cage and not inside it. At the time we thought the foreman was kind of being harsh on the guy but the more of these videos we see the more that we realize that the consequences of an unguarded failure are immense. This is an exaggerated example but it sure is impressive to see!

15″ tires will kill you too. Late 60’s the young kid at the Shell station by our house was killed instantly. Tire was on the shop floor and he was trying to get the bead to seat. If he would have left it on the machine he would have been fine.
