(Words and photos by Charles Wickam) – With the dog days of summer holding the gulf coast in a firm headlock, car shows during these months are pretty much nonexistent. So with a need to go out and look at some cars other than the ones in my driveway, I decided to head over to the local pick n pull and look for parts for the number of projects I have parked in the ol’ drive. I hopped into my trusty 1991 Chevy truck and cruised on over to Pasadena, Texas to the U-Pick-U-Pull yard in order to wander though what seems like and endless array of rows featuring forgotten, foreign ,and American automotive iron all lined up categorized by manufacturer, full size trucks, compact trucks and foreign cars, and buried back in the far corner the “antique section”. That’s where the gold lives.

Back there are rows of cars 1979 and older and trucks 72 and older. With a fresh lot of vehicles recently brought in, it gave me the opportunity to see if I could find something to add to my growing collection of hot rod parts for that next project. I was able to score a mint set of chevrolet scripted valve covers from a 283 and also spot a set of ram horn exhaust manifolds on a 68 impala that I will go back for in the next week or two and cross my fingers they are still there when I stop back since I didn’t have any real tools with me as I was mostly on a scoping out mission.

I’ve gotten pretty partial to a ’59 F100 since the body is actually in really good shape. It has gotten me thinking about how hard it would be to get rid of my ’56 truck cab that’s pretty far gone and replace it with the ’59.
With the variety of vintage metal in this place, there seems to be just about one of everything there with AMC Gremlins to Dodge Aspen R/Ts, to the black Lincoln Continental that looks like the one from the movie Animal House.
One thing is that there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of vintage vehicles since there is ANOTHER section of cars that are waiting in line to be brought into the yard. These are separated by a chain link fence, so after the other vintage cars have been picked clean or have gone “stale” then have a date with the crusher to be sent off for scrap metal these are brought in. For some reason I have an obsession with walking through rows of cars looking at them with their blown engines, damage from some kind of accident, or signs of major league neglect. It is a great way to spend the afternoon!
