Video Bonanza: Dyno Time!By Brian Lohnes Posted 12/23/09
We love dyno videos. Not dyno videos of stuff blowing up, catching fire, or generally malfunctioning, but dyno videos of cool motors being wrung out from bottom to top. We also have a love of off-beat motors and interesting things. Combining the two, we've put together a bonanza of videos featuring kick ass motors, from all walks of gearhead life, doing their thing on the pump. They're not all huge power makers, but they are all mills we'd love to have.
Don't worry, there's not a small-block Chevy in the pile!
We'll ease you in with a stock 426ci, single four barrel Hemi.
A 450 ft/lb Buick Nailhead
A blown, 300hp, 286ci Flathead V8
A blown AMC 401, getting whacked with a 175hp nitrous shot
A 20,000 RPM Cosworth V8
A 265ci, Aussie Hemi straight six
Ancient Dodge Flathead six with twin carbs and cool header
2332cc, 291hp, air cooled VW four banger

All were cool in my book. Part of the engine emissions certification test is a portion called the MAP, short for Maximum Applied Power. It's run first to determine how much power an engine can make at a given engine speed as the engine tests are based on percentages of speed and load. Anyhow, the engine is pulled to full rack and the dyno controls speed from slightly below idle to (IIRC) 110% of maximum rated speed. The test takes several minutes and results in see-thru exhaust manifolds, etc. I have a disc of some EPA pics that was put together for my retirement party and I'll look to see if it has a MAP on it. Might be interesting.

I like the big inch Pontiac a lot. Sounds really really expensive, as if building a 455 Poncho was ever cheap.
If you liked the Cosworth, you might like this F1 video too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGEqlNU30Tg&feature=related
The Aussie engine was cool.
Slapping a hair dryer on a VW is kinda cool I guess. It's kinda like polishing a turd though. But it seems like I don't see too many vintage Volkswagens or Porsches on the road anymore, so maybe a bunch of them died at once or something.

nice - that's like catnip to me - that's the part I miss the most about my first job - hearing those engines scream on that dyno.
Thanks for the "fix" ;D
