Video: Nascar Dodge R5/P7 Race Engine Lucas Oil TestBy Chad Posted 07/23/09

The name Lucas Oil can be found in conjunction with every kind of motorsport imaginable, and in order to provide lubricants for all these applications, the company has to do a lot of testing. At BangShift.com, we're lucky enough to have a great relationship with the gang over at Lucas, so they let us hang out at Westech Performance Group while they test oil in race and street engines of all kinds. This week, we were there while a Dodge R5/P7 NASCAR Sprint Cup engine was being tested. How does 800-plus horsepower and 9,000-plus rpm sound to you? It sounds real good to us.

Lucas has partnerships with race teams from every conceivable sanctioning body, which explains how they got a fresh, recently qualified R5/P7 Dodge Sprint Cup Motor. We aren’t talking some mellow street version. This is the real deal, and came with headers that will make your toes curl, plus fuel lines, and a carb spacer and intake already tuned for this particular engine. The fabrication is truly amazing. Watch the video and you’ll here the screams of 358 angry inches at more than 9,000 rpm. It’s fantastic.

Check out the photos below the video, and as usual, click the button next to the time counter to see the vid in full screen mode.

thanks wj

I don't understand you guys.  ::) They may be very similar to the Chevy heads, but Nascar won't let Dodge run the Hemi heads. And what are the chevy guys running in top fuel again?? A HEMI!
I would love to have one of these engines in my 4 speed duster. They are getting cheaper too.
And who said anything about these being for a street car? Maybe a put down the the mart once in a while, but on any track it would be a blast to drive.
making that kind of power from a single 4 bbl 12:1 engine on gas is pretty good
those nascar boys can teach us a lot about airflow and efficency
nascar is a joke

Make up your mind - they can teach us something, or they can't.
cute edit , letting dodge use gm cyl heads  is the nascar joke

sanctioning body is a joke

Nascar or not, anytime an v8 engine does it's 'song', it's just plain  cool.

Filmtip: when the camera is running in the dyno-cell and recording a run, turn-off the auto-focus function and manually focus on the engine first before hitting the record-button. This could prevent the image-blurring I think.

In many technical areas, yes. But they have huge money into CNC,
and R&D, etc.

Of course the R5/P7 has nothing to do with production or "street" engines.   And running the sort of cam timing,  induction package, and compression necessary to make 800+ h.p. at 9,000 rpm with a two-valve pushrod 358 would not be remotely possible for a daily driver.

Sure, it's cool to watch, but it has almost no relevance to anyone outisde oval track racing.  A turbocharged Gen III hemi could make a lot more power, get better mileage, and would be infinitely more streetable.  And it would be something that would cost a fraction of an R5/P7 mill.

NASCAR racing has drifted so far from "stock cars" that it's almost meaningless.

dang if those aren't SB2-2 heads - nascar is a joke

Impractical, gas hog, stupid...I don't care! If Santa left that engine under my tree, the 318 would be out of the truck before lunch.
