There were many, many highlights from Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week 2012 but the epic prize fight between Jeff Lutz and Larry Larson was certainly the one that the most eyeballs were focused on. During the week, Jeff Lutz not only ran with Larson but ran better than him at a couple of locations and it took some last day dramatic action for Larson to pull out the win and keep his streak alive. The two guys fought through adversity, tricky tracks, and the natural elements with highs and lows along the way.
Lutz went 212mph several times, Larson ran 6.940, making him the quickest man in the storied history of the event, people showed up in droves at each track to watch all the racers but especially to see that flat black 1957 Chevy and the silver Nova get after it in ways that so few other street legal vehicles on Earth can.
The two guys respect and like one another, but they damned sure left every inch or heart and guts on the table trying to win the event. Will it happen again next year? We sure as hell hope so and there are a few guys that showed up this year who are capable of bringing the heat just like Jeff and Larry. It isn’t going to get any easier for either guy in their quest for Drag Week supremacy!
Hot Rod put together a cool video that’s almost 17-minutes long detailing the battle and there’s even some audio of the lame announcer at work in here. Press play below to see the story, the tracks, and the runs that made Drag Week 2012 such a wild deal!
