In what can only be described as the craziest story we have heard about in a while, a Vermont farmer who was apparently fed up with the local police department, fired up his huge, four wheel drive tractor, drove it to the police station and proceeded to crush all of the cars present in the lot. By the time he was done and apprehended one mile down the road, Roger Pion of Newport, VT had wiped out half of the town’s police fleet. Pion was arrested on drug possession and resisting arrest charges last month and apparently had been a frequent “customer” of the Newport police over the years, but had no history of violence.
One of the parts of the story that cracked us up (and only because no one was injured on killed!) was that the police tried to use spike strips to stop the tractor. Not surprisingly, the massive tractor tires on the beast pictured below weren’t even the least bit harmed by the strips. With all of the cops at the station stuck there with no transportation, the apprehension of Pion was carried out by officers out on patrol.
The tractor, which you will see below is a Case MX255. It weighs more than 28,000lbs in the form you see below. The engine is a 505ci inline six turbo diesel that makes torque like a locomotive. There’s an 18 speed transmission and it can roll along at almost 25mph in 18th gear. It is four wheel drive (eight wheel drive in this case) and can cultivate lots of land very quickly. They are also awesome at moving snow and of course, crushing police cars as evidenced below.
