Lethbridge, Canada is a city located out in the Alberta Province of the Great White North and it plays host to an event called, “Street Machine Weekend” each summer. As you’ll see in this video, it has been going on for more than three decades, so there is certainly some historical provenance behind the celebration of hot rods, horsepower, and fun.
As part of the celebration, organizers put together a 100ft drags event. We have heard of other places doing this kind of stuff because it is a fun and relatively safe activity for people to participate in and it puts butts in the stands so to speak. We have to assume that normally the cars competing for fun in the 100ft drags are mild street cars. Being mild street cars, they don’t get a chance to build up much steam in such a short sprint.
We have to guess that the dude in this video, who showed up with a pretty serious blown Vega, which sounds like it is on alcohol was an experienced drag racer who wanted to put on a good show for the crowd by ripping off the quickest lap of the day. The good news is that he both put on a good show and turned the quickest lap of the day. The bad news is that he wrecked his car amazingly hard in the process. We hope that the trophy was a big one, because this dude certainly gave it all that he had in the process of earning it.
In all honesty, we feel bad for the guy. Seeing someone crash their car at a fun event like this is always a bummer. If we were him we’d probably withhold the information that we crashed at the 100ft drags. That could get ugly once your pals found out.
