George Ray’s Wildcat Drag Strip is a destination spot for any hot rodder. It is literally the place where time stood still, where the term “insurance company” would garner you either a punch in the face or a haughty laugh and the place that is so rustically awesome that it defies description. All of the classes at George Ray’s are heads up and amenities are limited to, well, nothing. The place is narrow, lines with big wooden posts set into the ground, and has not changed in the decades it has been open. George may have passed a couple of years ago, but his spirit and memory are alive and well at the track he built behind his own house.
Due to the narrow track width, overall shortness, total lack of track prep, and one hundred other reasons, reasonable people would suspect that the clientele would be limited to fairly low powered cars. Those reasonable people would be completely and utterly wrong. There are videos on YouTube of dragsters running deep into the 4-second zone at the place, small tire cars skating their way down the narrow strip, and this one below of a big ol’ Chevy wagon carrying the front end several hundred feet off the starting line! In the other lane is a Super Comp/Super Gas looking roadster. These are two VERY healthy cars getting it done on the ancient strip. The traction ain’t bad either…
