Quick release steering wheels are both a blessing and a curse for racers. They allow easier ingress and egress from race cars but they also can fail at inopportune times, like when your car is speeding along on a race track or at Bonneville (ask Tonya Turk). This video is pretty awesome because it shows an English racer hauling the mail around the Donington Park course when his (admittedly cheap eBay bought) quick release wheel comes off in his hands. Instead of freaking out, jamming on the brakes and wrecking, this dude keeps the hammer down and manages to get the wheel lined up on the splines and stuck back on the hub before the next corner!
There’s not a lot of overt drama happening here but if you have ever driven at high speed and lost control, even just for a second, you know what it feels like. Some people lock up with fear, panic and do the exact wrong thing, or end up wadding their car into a ball because they didn’t have the mental presence to deal with the situation. The driver of this car has great situational awareness and concentration. The dude also has some industrial sized stones as well!
Press play and watch a racer save his own ass at high speed!
