We were chatting up a gearhead buddy recently who is into the old stuff…like the real old stuff. This dude has real vintage parts like a Kong ignition,a pile of ancient Thicksun intake manifolds and he is on the hunt for a set of first run Ardun heads. The guy is like a parts detective hunting this stuff up. It is a neat obsession in our book, that’s for sure. Since that conversation we have been watching cool Ardun Flathead Ford videos on YouTube and ran into this dyno video featuring a couple of pulls made by the engine described in the title. Something making near six times the horsepower of stock is neato.

This engine is a 296ci flattie topped with the Ardun heads, what looks to be a 6-71 blower, and a pair of four barrel carbs. The description on the video claims that the engine made 456hp @ 6500RPM and the torque number was about the same as the HP peak. The engine sounds really good and looks even better with the OHV heads on it. It has none of that poppy little sound a normal Flathead has, this thing is all business!

Press play to head one mean ass Flathead on the pump!

The Wally Bell Show is one of the true “must listen” motorsports radio shows on the ‘waves these days. Wally, Jeff, Gordie, and the gang always do a fantastic job on whatever topic they are tackling that week. This week, the show will be a tribute to the legendary EJ Potter, a man who is near and dear to the heats of BangShift nation. Potter was a true empirical genius. A man who could assess an issue with his eyes and develop a mechanical solution without putting pen to paper, busting out a slide rule, or calling a friend for help. They busted the mold when Elon Jack Potter was born.

I’ll be on Wally’s show yakking about EJ and his awesome life as one of drag racing’s true legends. Few racers in straight line competition have run on three continents and as frequently as EJ did. He never missed a booking, even after being hellaciously burned in the Nightmare I 1957 Plymouth, he still ran the V8 bike. His burns were so bad that his then wife had to keep sopping up the ooze that was coming out of his wounds as he drove down the road from place to place to run the bike.

I was lucky enough to have several conversations with EJ over the years, some for published stories and some because I just wanted to call him and shoot the breeze. I still refuse to take his number out of my cell phone.

If you are a fan of old school drag racing, if you are a fan of EJ Potter, if you are a fan of great radio, tune in tonight! All you have to do is to click the link below and once there, click the huge button in the middle of the screen that says, “CLICK HERE TO LISTEN LIVE“.

Back when we did the Top 11 Race Car Driver Names it that tripped off a firestorm when people failed to read the intro and assumed we were calling those guys the Top 11 Race Car Drivers ever. We’re tempting fate again by doing another list of names.

Dragstrips typically have cooler names than circle tracks. Top-level facilities often have corporate sponsors and all kinds of junk that make them sound like a shopping mall, not a race track. The tracks listed below have no such problem. In fact, at several of these tracks the only “sanctioning body” is the huge dude at the end of the bleachers collecting the bets from spectators.

The Top 11 Best Dragstrip Names

11) Skyview Dragstrip, Tioga Center, New York: This is a nice, fairly new strip that’s located on a gorgeous piece of real estate in upstate New York. IHRA Sanctioned.

10) Santa Pod, England, Wellingborough, England: It’s the Indy of England and one of the most well-known strips in the world, partly because of its weird name, but mostly because of it’s rich history. The name came from using the first part of the name of the old Santa Ana track back in California and the first section of the name of the Poddington Airfield, which is where the track is located. Hence, Santa Pod. FIA Sanctioned.

9) Action City Dragway, Terre Haute, Indiana: It’s a nice little 1/8-mile facility with a killer name. A promoter’s dream we’d say. We can hear it now, SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY at ACTION CITY DRAGWAY! NHRA Sanctioned.

8. ) Summerduck Dragway, Summerduck, Virginia: Sure it’s just named after the town it’s located in, but you’ve got to admit, you scratched you head when you first read it. It’s an IHRA sanctioned 1/8-mile.

7) No Problem Raceway Park, Belle Rose, Louisiana: This is a great ¼-mile strip that’s host to one of the NHRA SportsNationals events, which are Sportsman-only national events. Praised for its racer friendly atmosphere and hard-biting strip, it’s only 12 feet above sea level and can provide some killer conditions when the air is right.

6) George Ray’s Wildcat Dragstrip, Paragould, Arkansas: It’s not just a track, it’s a living history museum and a look into what drag racing is when boiled down to its wonderfully simply essence and it happens every Sunday in George Ray’s backyard. The name is as awesomely retro as the rest of the place. Sanction? Not exactly.

5) Redline Raceway, Caddo Mills, Texas: Another great retro name from a little 1/8-mile strip in Texas. This track is an IHRA sanctioned facility and is neat in the fact that is seems to never close. They are racing continuously through the winter, every Sunday. We’re shoveling snow…suck. Does anyone know if this is the same location as the Drag Safari stop in 1955?

4) Quarter Aces Drag-o-Way, Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania: Here’s a track that made a name switch. They would have never made the list when the facility was know as South Mountain Dragway. We are a little confused on why it’s called Quarter Aces and it’s an 1/8-mile strip. It sounds better we think. It appears to be NHRA sanctioned

3) Yellow Belly Dragway, Dallas, Texas: This place lives up to its name because many “yeller bellies” have probably run screaming and yelling from the place after experiencing a night of action there. It’s an outlaw track in every sense of the word. Everything we have read tells us that this place is wild west outlaw drag racing personified, both good and bad. Sanction? HA!

2) Headhunter Motor Club Putt Putt Bush Track, Eatonton, Georgia: Sweet Jesus! Unsanctioned.

1) Junkyard #1 Dragway, Canton, Mississippi: We almost fell off of our chairs when we learned of this place. There’s not a ton to say other than things you’d expect, like, it’s an 1/8-mile, there’s no sanction, seemingly no rules, and no guarantee you’ll get out alive. A guy on another message board talked about racing through a puddle the size of a lake at the end of the track. This ain’t a list of great tracks, just great names and they don’t get any better than this one.

Last week we showed you video of a fourth generation Camaro spitting both rear wheels out on the starting line at Beaver Springs Dragway in Pennsylvania. This week it is a 1957 Chevy on the starting line of an unknown drag strip. The ’57 looks like a full on drag car with the huge by large rear slicks, ass high stance, and wheelie bar. Like all drag cars, eventually racers find the weak link. Sometimes it happens in subtle ways but more often than not it happens violently like this racer found out.

The driver of the ’57 lands on the throttle when the tree comes down and all of the wheel studs retaining the left rear wheel shear off. Just going on the reaction of the car, this Chevy must have a spool in it because it goes into an immediate donut, turning virtually on it’s own axis. Luckily the other driver jumped the tree, because the Chevy heads directly for the left lane and may have contacted the other car if he was late on the leave.

We’ve seen lots of weirdness on the strip, but a guy pulling a donut before even reaching the Christmas tree is pretty impressive. The good news is that nothing other than the studs and the man’s pride appeared to be injured during the filming of this video.

Check your wheel studs…don’t suffer the same fate as this dude and the guy in the Camaro!

(Photo by Chad Reynolds) – Last weekend Chad was cruising the streets of LA with his camera in hand. Normally this would be a recipe for the police to arrest him for doing something inappropriate or illegal. The good news is that my phone didn’t ring and the BangShift army of cheap suit equipped lawyers was not pressed into action. Chad did manage to catch a pretty curious photo during his day walking the beat.

Right there on the sidewalk was a little tricycle padlocked and chained to a bike stand. There’s got to be some back story here. Did a little kid pedal this sucker all the way to this spot with the chain around his next Flava-flav style? Did the kiddo some with a BA Barracus style security guard that had the chain and honkin’ pad lock?

Chad didn’t stick around the find out and we don’t blame him. Any place that you’ve got to lock up the trike with a chain capable of dragging a locomotive is no place to be spending extended periods of time!

Caption this photo!

(Photos by Scott Liggett) – You just read about Scott Liggett’s adventure on the 2012 Car Craft Anti-Tour. He did a great job of relaying his experience on the adventure and shot a bunch of awesome photos. We stuck a link in his item to this gallery but we thought it was so good that we’d also point you to it this way as well. From Brian Rock’s killer GTO to the Buick of BangShifter Randal Burns, there was something for everybody at this event. The end destination was a cool car show up in Morrow Bay, California so there was no massive thrashes, blown up parts, or drag strip victims. As cool as that stuff is, there’s something to be said for having a relaxing weekend with friends and great cars.

Hit the link below to see Scott’s gallery from the 2012 Car Craft Anti-Tour kick off car show!

(Words and Photos by Scott Liggett) – I had been hitting up the Car Craft Magazine’s Anti-Tour since 2006 when we headed down to San Diego to hit up Race Legal’s Friday Night Drags at the parking lot of Qualcomm Stadium (Or, whatever they call it these days). But, I haven’t gone since 2009 when the Tour drove out in the desert to Firebird Raceway near Chandler, AZ to go drag racing. That’s what I liked about the Anti-Tour. They drove someplace cool and we beat on our cars.

I fell off the wagon for a couple years. In 2010, they headed out to Pheonix to go to a car show, but mostly got rained on. Last year, they drove up to the coast to Morro Bay for a car show in downtown. I didn’t go in 2010 because I didn’t feel like driving seven hours across the desert just park my car in front of a lawn chair. Last year, I missed the Anti-Tour because I was on a cruise to Italy and Greece. At least our ship wasn’t run aground by a captain showing off and we missed riots in Athens because they had a soccer game that day.

When I heard the itinerary for this year’s Anti-Tour; I surprised to hear that they were repeating last year’s tour. The dudes over at Car Craft decided to hit up the big show in Morro Bay again. I was a bit let down. I was hoping to go and pound on my Impala again on the drag strip or autocross, not drive all the way up there just to sit at a car show.

I talked to some of the regulars of the Anti-Tour and the consensus was that it was a great time. Also, I never been to Morro Bay and was curious to explore another town in the giant state of California. We also wouldn’t taking the boring freeways there and I’m always for a drive on the side roads.

This year the meet up and kick off point was at Wilwood Brake’s headquarters in Camarillo, CA. To get there, I had a couple choices; drive my ’65 Impala SS up the Hwy 101 in morning traffic, or take the Pacific Coast Highway up to Camarillo. I took the latter for no other reason is that it’s a gorgeous drive at sunrise.

Once at Wilwood’s facility, the guys from Wilwood gave us a great tour of their facility in action. Unfortunately, pictures weren’t allowed on the work room floor, so all I have are these two of a ’69 Camaro getting it’s suspension digitized for a new disc brake setup. I was amazed how many brake systems they make for the car and truck manufacturers. They whittle so many brake calipers that they sweep up 30 tons of aluminum to be recycled each month!!

After the tour, we had a kick off car show right in Wilwood’s parking lot. Check out the gallery of pictures we took that morning while downing bagels and coffee with our other two hands.

It was time to hit the road towards Morro Bay. Morro Bay is a tiny little hamlet right on the Pacific Ocean about 100 miles north of Santa Barbara. Driving up there on Hwy 101 is actually a beatiful drive; but Anti-Tour planner, Car Craft staffer John McGann had a more scenic route in mind. We headed straight north on State Route 33, then turned west towards the coast on State Route 166.

There is nothing quite like cruising down the highway with a bunch of cool cars.

Our first stop on State Route 33 was in Ojai to top off the gas tanks as we have about 150 miles of road ahead with no gas stations along the way. We literally took over this tiny little service station with rumbling cars.

SR33 is a windy, twisty road heading up into the Santa Ynez Mountains, it is easy to get separated from the other cars as I noticed while taking these pictures of the tunnels. I hit the gas to catch up but quickly discovered that the group had pulled over to let us catch up.

Our first unscheduled stop was literally in the middle of nowhere up near the top of the Pine Mountain Summit when a Tourer known as Mike had an issue with his 454 powered 65 Malibu. It just shut off on him and he coasted off the side of the road. One thing about bangshifters cruising together, when one car goes down, nearly two dozen people stop to help. I thought there were too many mechanics trying to diagnose his issue, so I stepped back and took some pictures of the scenery.

That ’31 Model A was driven by a character named Aqua Bob, a close friend of Mikes. He drove Mike back down to Ojai to the parts we passed earlier to get what was needed to fix his Malibu, but it turns out the module wiring harness in his HEI was frayed and shorting out.

Later, we stopped in a town so small it only qualified being a wide spot in the road for lunch. The Burger Barn in New Cayuma fed us some of the best grub of the whole trip. SR166 is amazing road as it runs from the coastal range, through green hills with cattle ranches and wineries, then climbs up into the high desert scrub brush where there are oil fields to where it ends near the south end of the San Juaquin Valley just south of Bakersfield, We went west through the prettier parts of SR 166. In the late after noon we made to Morro Bay and in sight of the Morro Rock.

The car show in Morro Bay encompasses the whole town for the whole weekend. Friday festivities includes open houses at the local shops and a cruise through the area. It ends with a cruise through town in a circle. The best view is to find a spot on the route, park your butt and take pics.

That cruise included really bad luck for one of the Anti-Tour regulars. Aqua Bob was cruising that red Model A when the throttle linkage broke and the throttle hung wide open. He did what he could to stop a car he wasn’t familar with dodging at least six other cruisers before plowing into a truck exiting a parking lot. Bob said he was trying to find the key, but in the stress of the moment forgot it was not on the right side of the steering column, but under the dash on the left side. He remembered too late to save the car.

Saturday was the big car show that literally took over the entire downtown area of Morro Bay. I’m not a big fan of just sitting beside my car at shows, so I walked the show with Randal Burns taking pictures and talking to other show goers. By the end of the day, I’d had been on my feet the whole day and wanted a beer. We met up with Car Craft staffers Jeff Smith, Doug Glad, John McGann, and Tayler Le ease our pain with alcohol and food. Later, Randal and I ended up at a local bar with a great band and I killed what was left of my voice chatting up other Anti-Tour goers.

Sunday morning, the Anti-Tour group had dwindled down to less than a dozen as people head off in different directions home. Many were sleeping off the night before. McGann thought it would great to start off by driving over the narrow isthmus to Morro Rock for a closer look of the shore.

I spent an afternoon picking Jeff Smith’s brain bench racing this and that; and listening to his stories from his thirty year career in the magazine business.

Back in 1962 if you really wanted to dominate the action on the drag strip, this was the car you needed to have. A 421ci Super Duty Catalina with all of the lightweight aluminum body components, a hand built engine that while rated at 405hp really made more like 450hp and only 179 were produced. These were not high performance street cars, there were snotty ass race cars that were designed to show up and eat every other full bodied car alive, which they did handily. Pontiac went a step further in 1963 by creating the so called “swiss cheese” Catalinas with more than 100 lightening holes drilled in the frame, but we dig the ’62s more because the horizontal headlights look better than the stacked ones introduced on the 1963 models.

As we mentioned above, these cars used and aluminum front end and bumpers to reduce weight. This care is amazingly rare because out of the 179 produced, only 20 had bucket seats. This is one of those twenty. The white exterior paint and teal interior are the correct factor combo and there’s not much stuff that we dig more than a four speed handle coming through the floor of a muscle car with no console, just a long handle and a rubber boot. That really looks the business to us.

The motors in these cars were impressive for their era. Displacing 421ci, they were equipped with a custom ground solid lifter cam, heavily worked cylinder heads developed for Pontiac’s NASCAR efforts, an aluminum intake manifold, twin 500CFM carbs, forged pistons sourced from Mickey Thompson, cast iron full length headers with exhaust dumps built in, and it was all based on a beefy four bolt main block and forged crankshaft. This was one hairy chested mother of a factory hot rod!

The amazing thing about the Super Duty Pontiacs was how well they ran and for so long. Typically during this time, the factories were cranking out newer and faster race models each year. Chrysler with their Max Wedge and then Hemi cars, Ford with the lightweight Galaxies, then the Thunderbolts, and Chevy with Z-11s and then Z-16 Chevelles, etc. The Super Duty cars were so good that they were able to hang with the newer stuff a couple of years after they should have been too long in the tooth to compete.

This car is beautiful and appears to have been cosmetically restored to a level of perfection it may not have seen leaving the factory. From underneath, the oil pan looks like it shows the wear and tear of years on the street and strip, which we think is boss. This baby hasn’t lived in isolation forever, it was used in anger! We wish we had the cash, because after we made sure the motor was OK, we’d be out there on the strip with a helmet, a lap belt, and that shifter handle in our right hand. How cool would it be to just wipe out new Camaros and Mustangs with this big ol’ Poncho? We can’t think of a better way to spend $175,000. Hey, we never said it was going to be cheap!

Guy Fieri is taking a weekend off of driving the bus to Flavorown to drive the pace car at the 2012 Indy 500. The man with the frosted tips, oft flamed clothing, and propensity for consuming food at diners, drive ins, and budget minded restaurants (see what we did there?) sees this as the opportunity of a lifetime. A confirmed car guy, or a least a guy confirmed to like cars, Fieri has been in the headlines recently when his yellow Lamborghini, which was stolen a year ago was recovered by police. Normally seen tooling around in a Camaro on TV, the Lambo must be his off camera mechanical mistress.

There will be no Lamborghini at Indy for the most totally tubular celebrity chef on basic cable. Instead he will be at the helm of a 2013 Corvette ZR1. The Vette is capable of running 205mph flat out but the speeds on the course at IMS will be significantly lower. The only real way to rate his performance at this gig is to see gauge it on the infamous drive of Eldon Palmer in 1971 when he crashed the pace car into a grandstand of media and VIPs at the end of pit road. The Vette has far better stoppers on it than the Challenger that Palmer was driving, but you get the idea.

The photo below sums up Fieri’s response when told that he got the gig. Reports have him screaming nearly 50 of the overused, tired phrases he normally slings like hash on his show upon hearing the news. Hey, at least he’s not driving a damned Camry hybrid.

(Full disclosure: I ate at Fieri’s original restaurant Johnny Garlic’s a few years ago and it kicked all ass. This may have been before his flamed clothing period.)
