brakes grab, tire grips, strut rod goes bang

I was making a high speed hard stop to finish bedding in the new Bear brakes I installed on the car when BANG! it pulled hard to the right and even after letting off the brakes for a second there was tire smoke billowing off the right front. I managed to get it off the main road and found that the right front tire was stuffed up in the fender at a funny angle and I knew something in the suspension had failed. Sure enough the strut had broken right at the end of the threaded portion at the forward end by the bushing. I think they were the last original part on the car, I suppose I should have known better. :-[

So in addition to replacing the front fender which was folded back flush with the back of the passenger front fender well, I'm looking for an upgraded set of replacement strut rods and lower control arms as the one on the damaged side is tweaked as well.

It seems there are about ten different brands of fabricated lower control arms and high-end replacement strut assemblies for early Mustangs. Which ones work best, save weight and won't break under heavy braking and cornering with a very heavy car? 3800#.

The car is a 71 convertable, so that may limit some of the choices. Do I need to get them from the same source? I'd think so, but I'm looking for proven combinations as these things aren't cheap.

If anyone else has had this failure are there any special things to check? I'm concerned about the idler arm, steering link etc. and the sway bar link was pulled at a severe angle as well.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Global West makes some really nice, HD suspension pieces for your application, but they are NOT cheap.

Thanks, I decided to go with the equally affordable Total Control Products lower control arms and struts as I liked the design better. We'll see how it goes when I put them on the car.

I also flat spotted the tire down to cords so it looks like new tire time too. This just gets better.

I'll say this the brakes work like nobody's business and thought I had good ones before.
