    4L80E Converter

    Howdy,

I have a 4L80E out of a gas 96 G3500 2WD Van. I'm debating replacing the factory converter I have with either another factory converter or an el cheapo eBay special till I can get the turbo sorted out and properly match the converter to the engine.

Thoughts on changing the converter and if so what other application will yeild a better converter?

    Thanks,

My 2003 2500HD Silverado with a 6 liter stalled at 2500 rpm, give or take... if that helps.

Now,,,remember,,,this is an opinion,,,,and you know what they say?,,,,everybody has one,,,anyway,,,I would go with a stock converter,it's like what Malibu said,,,,stock converters stalled somewhere between 2200 and 2600,,and that is a great stall for the street. And like you said,,,until you get everything sorted out,,,the trans will be thanking you,,and about those "cheapos",,,I've seen some that worked real good,,,and others,,,that came apart the first time you appied torque to them,,but,,if you're like me,,,,"bottom line",,,it comes down to how many dineros you have to drop.

big trouble with 4L80e lockup clutches blowing up and filling the trans with clutch material , buy new
I like the 4l60e a little better , when an 80 lets go , it usually wrecks the planetaries and the rear support is a problem too

Anything preventative that can be done to help prevent this scenario?
Of all the paths you take in life - make sure a few of them are dirt.

I would say yes, since TCI's 6 speed auto is based on a 4l80e case and they told me they could build it to withstand 1200hp.........

the usual move is add clutches to a hogged out over drive drum and eliminate the lockup feature
