On late 80's early 90's fords the fuel pump "primes" every time your turn the key from off to run. I do this a few times when the fuel system is opened to build pressure back in the rail. I would think you could hear it from the driver's seat if you just open the door. Just turn the key to run not start/crank to hear the fuel pump.

There should also be Shraeder valve on the fuel rail. It should show about 40 psi if the pump is working. You might also pull a plug wire and see if there's any spark.

Finally saw him again, took it to a shop and it was the fuel pump. The one thing I was wrong about was the mileage. It wasnt 98,000, its 9800. Bought this from the showroom and drove a few sundays the past 10 years after really miling it up the first two lol.

He wants someone that will enjoy this car to buy it, but there really is not a comparable car out there to price it. He shocks me at the price he thinks he will ask for it, I think it should be far over 20, even tho a 98 is probably not a big choice for people looking for cobra's. Any idea on price for a pristine 98?

I would sign up for every mustang / cobra / svt message board and advertise it, for a high price, if no one bites put it on ebay. Glad you found the fuel problem.

They hate sitting. My 98 GT ate a brand new pump from sitting. I have no idea yet why it's a problem, but the pump doesn't sound like it's running.

Sadly, unless you can find somebody who really wants it, 20k is a LOT for a 98 Cobra... kind of like selling a 72 Mustang. It's the last year of the first SN95's but that's about all it's got going from a collector standpoint.

Ebay - with a reserve - that's one brutally honest way to find out what the market say's it's worth. Lots of pictures and a complete write up with all the specs sure helps cut down on stupid questions.

    Beags - don't you mean '73?

yes, 73 - I started to say mid-year and then thought about then new edge being a 99. Still damn hard to get a good price on a 72.

Thats what he asked me, why would it just go bad. They ended up charging him almost 1000.00 for the work, which pissed me off because the car is immaculate down there. Charged him list price from ford for the pump and filter, about 120 for the tow, so I guess the work Cobra raised it a few hundred. But he is really anal about keeping the fuel tank full. Someone told him the more air space in the tank the more the fuel will varnish when it sits, so he tops it off constantly and only uses premium. I dont know about that. I just say I dont keep filling my tank after the fuel nozzle clicks anymore because I figure you are getting up over the level that pump is happy at. I doubt any part of his pump was ever dry.

I just noticed that 98 was the last year of no return fuel lines, so I guess it might be an end of an era car, but like you guys say, you find the right person and they will pay enough. 9600 miles someone might toss one in their own net when they read that.

exactly - the Ebay or even Barret Jackson with a reserve will get you an idea of what it's worth. Have him check out Hemmings too?

I'm betting you typo'd, but the 98's were the last year *With* a return, they went returnless in 99. Having put a pump in the GT with no lift and a full tank, I would charge somebody a 1000.00 too! I'm even happier that I get to do it again.

The 100k stuff is bringing 8000.00 or so around here. In fact, thanks a LOT cuz I saw a 97 that is mint yesterday, roller for 2500.00. He pulled the engine and trans for a 96 Mystic and is selling the shell with title, inspected, for 2500. 100k never been wrecked, stock '97. THANKS, I really needed another car. LMAO - oh well. I'll call later to see if it's still there.

I never really got into the new edge (99-04) and you don't see a lot of 94-98's around here that aren't sixes and beat to death. Don't get me wrong here, but they are quite popular with the Hispanic youth. I'm not saying that in a bad way, that's just who I see driving most of them. I don't have 20 grand to buy a 9600 mile one but someone might. You never know until you put it out there. Sorry to hear the dealer screwed him over. That's not 1000.00 worth of work.
