I live in Whitehall just a few miles north of Muskegon. Here are some of the lakeshore campgrounds in the area from Grand Haven to Whitehall. I posted this on another site as well.
If you stay at Muskegon State Park there are two great taverns close by. The Red Rooster Tavern has Live Music, good food and a Rustic feel. Has a rock/dirt parking lot if anyone cares. It is just north of the campground. And Bear Lake Tavern. Great food and has a fantastic view of the sunset through the Muskegon Lake channel from Lake Michigan.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Grand Haven
235 sites available, full hook-up sites available. Heated outdoor pool, camp store and organized activities. Our adorable one room (sleeps four) and two room log cabins (sleeps six) with a small porch are equipped with a double bed (may be a futon), bunk beds (one set in the one room and two sets in the two room), table and chairs and a small refrigerator. All beds have mattresses. You will need to provide all other essentials for the camping experience. Two miles to beach. Open May - October.
Grand Haven State Park
This is a 48 acre park with beautiful sandy beach on the shore of Lake Michigan and the Grand River to the north. The park has 174 modern campsites on pavement, picnic area, and playground equipment, pier and lighthouse and the boardwalk from the park to Grand Haven are big attractions. Metal detecting area. No dogs allowed at the beach.
Hoffmaster State Park
1,100 acres of forest covered sand dunes along three miles of Lake Michigan sandy beach. Located in a wooded valley are 293 shaded campsites, picnicking, swimming, ten miles of hiking trails, snowshoeing. A marked three mile cross-country trail requiring intermediate skill is available. The Gillette Visitor Center provides interpretations of dune ecology. Metal detecting area.
Muskegon State Park
Over 1,165 acres on Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. 247 modern and semi-modern campsites, two mini-cabins. Sun bathing, swimming, picnicking, fishing, boat launch, ice fishing. Twelve miles of marked and groomed hiking trails, with five miles (8 kilometers) lighted for all levels of cross-country skiers. Trail maps. Replica of an historic fort blockhouse overlooking Lake Michigan and sand dunes. Metal detecting area.
Pioneer County Park
Pioneer County Park is located on Lake Michigan north of Muskegon. We offer 213 modern campsites and a group camping area with water and electric hookups, flush toilets and have a sanitary dump station. We also offer activity areas including horseshoes, baseball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, playground, swimming beach, picnic areas and lodge. Call for campsite availability.
Trailway Campground
Trailway Campground, situated in the heart of Montague, Michigan is a little taste of country in the downtown. Shady, grassy sites with gravel pads. All RV sites have water, electric, sewer and cable TV. Tent sites have water and electric. Clean restrooms, hot showers and near to shops, fishing, boating, and biking. Seven miles from Michigan Adventure Amusement Park and ten miles from beautiful Lake Michigan beaches.
