    Ford AOD tailshaft bushing install

So after almost getting kicked out the strip last week for leaks, tried to figure out where the leaks were coming from. Found the tailshaft bushing came out and was just sitting on the driveshaft yoke.

So now I need to put a new one in, I know you have to pull the tailshaft housing to install it, just wondering if there was a trick to put a new one in.

You can see it wiped out the coating and was down to the copper.

I have ordered a longer drive shaft, the one I was running was not going in to the tailshaft far enough.

I think it's a pretty straight forward press fit install Neal - surely easier with the tail housing out of the car - glad you found this now - not 100 miles into drag week!
There's always something new to learn.

Depending on how much damage the tail shaft housing itself sustained, you might be better off replacing the entire tail shift housing. Self extracting bearings often take a lot of material with them. Their are specific tools for driving in these bearings, a trans shop will have them and may be the best if not the cheapest choice.

Took the tail housing off, not scored at all. just a little cleanup with 1500 grit. Put new bearing in the freezer, used friends press to press it in. Waiting on new driveshaft so see if it is all better.

I think tccoa has some discussion about an oiling mod to keep that from happening again.. did you get a look at their aod build guide? I'm being lazy or would post here, but iirc, it's a protected PDF. We have to be careful, or TC will report us to the library of congress. haha.

no i did not see the guide. I am hoping have the correct length driveshaft will be what stops if from happening again.

http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny...on/index.shtml is for AODe / 4r70w, you might ask the author on there if it's the same location for the port on an AOD? If it does it again, might be worth looking at.
