In any case it would be nice to know whos got the skill here...

Keith I've been machining for years and you don't need a DRO to use your mill you just need to be able to count your turrns and do math to make anything you can imagine but I would recomend useing layout fluid and scribing your shape and diminsions before starting your cuts just dive in and learn the old fashoned way good luck

      Re: Machinists ?

Got loads of respect for guys who can make sumptin outta nuttin. A machinist buddy bailed me arse out just yesterday. I will post the photos later.

Happened to be drinking some beers with buddies one night talking about hot rods and this guy who was ossified drunk leans over and joined in. The conversation turns to us taking about machining parts and how neat some of the equipment is. Then the drunk guy mutters, "The world is lucky that Bridgeports don't have brains....they are the only machine that can replicate themselves." Is it true...I dunno for sure, but I thought it was a pretty witty line...for a guy who literally peed his pants several minutes later.

        Re: Machinists ?

I have the knowledge of how to operate a lathe, milling machine, and to TIG, MIG and arc weld. I even have a mini lathe and milling machine and a couple welders in the garage. But having worked with a true machinist/fabricator before, I'm DEFINITELY not in that category. But it's not going to stop me from doing my own stuff and most importantly (to me) increasing my skill along the way!

        And making plenty of mistakes...

The saying in the maching world is that the turret lathe is the only machine that can duplicate istself but I seem to agree with your drunk friend because I've ran both and I can do a lot more on a mill than a lathe

I started out with the charcoal/shop vac blower or "flower pot foundry" method.(easy to google) But I now run a modded natural gas kiln because it's relatively cheap and really clean. The only sand to use is petrobond that uses basically motor oil for it's stickiness. Water is a drag because of the too much too little factor. I'll post some pics of my work when I have some time. I am still learning but have had some success even as a newbie.

I don't have a mill or a lathe, but I do have a drill press and a bandsaw.
Here's a little something I made to top off the big block that's going into the '71 GMC.

And here's a pic of it on the motor, also if you look I made the fuel regulator bracket to.

The best philosophy to live by ;) I'd rather have an ebgine bay made of accesory brackets, idlers, and misc pieces made by me anyday over anything elese.

Nice Work TC...we would have called it a surfer's cross in my youth.....

I really like stuff like that... just a nice clean little bit that adds some flavor to an other wise utilitarian part...

Surfer's Cross, not sure if I've ever heard it call that. It has a little more meaning to me since my Grandfather was in WWII and faught for the Germans. I actually have his real Iron Cross and some other medals that he got from the war. Also I look at it as a sign of things that are custom. Kind of like how they use it with custom bikes, I just use it for custom cars. I also plan on making another one for my '71 Camaro.

And Hey, thanks for the comp Keith.

                        Peace Out, TC

                          Re: Machinists ?

Turk, Here's a couple pics, I have cooler stuff, this is pre bridgeport and homemade sand. The digicam is missing. The pictures are a carb lever for a winfield carb and a crank driven magneto housing for a model a ford I am working on. I used an actual lever for a pattern on the lever and the timing cover mag drive necessitates a pattern. You can see an original cover on the top. The circular deal will house a ball bearing shaft to run a gear off the crank. If you are ever in Orange I love to talk shop. Notice the finished aluminum lever is smaller than the original, this is caused by excessive shrinkage due to not enough aluminum available to it, the sloppy unfinished ones don't have this problem due to the extra aluminum available to em while cooling. I am just learning and by no means an expert. I would LOVE to find a local mentor but it's not so popular a hobby.

Damn that is cool.... Talk about something from Nothing... wow...

I was impressed with this process in Australia... it was like everyone knew how to cast things...and wieghted the advantages of making thier own Vs buying one pre-made...

We spent time in three shops and all three of them had the ablity too cast things... Black Out Steve on here met one of my pals down there... Rod Tingate... a brillant mechanic who was one of the last privateers to hold the number #1 position in F1 Motorcycles in the early 70's... He was the mechanic for Kim Newcombe.... Someone on here was from Silverstone which is where Kim died in 73... Anyway... those people don't know the word Can't... reminds me of American's back in the day...

Keith ( again I'm not like my grand dad... but I know what he did )
