    Your most memorable DW drive

I have seen some comments about routes for this year. Got me to thinking about some of the more memorable routes for me the last few years. While the cars floating in the water at the bottom of an underpass somewhere in Ohio during a monsoon storm on DW10 was a close second, my most memorable was on DW09 going thru Amish country in northern Indiana with a large pack of 500+ HP cars as the kids were getting out of school and trying to ride their bikes, and horse buggies home as we thundered by... the expressions on their faces was priceless!!
    What was yours?

RT2 last year - trying to call and warn folks - realizing we'd didn't have cell phone coverage, and seeing buffalo, like 5ft off the road, about the time we passed the Indian reservation signs, we realized we were in fact in the middle of NO WHERE.
    ;-)
There's always something new to learn.

My most memorable was 2011 trip to Amar. Due to trans repair at Great Bend, we got on the road at almost 6pm and made it to Guymon Ok by 11pm and headed for Texas state line on that two lane blacktop with deep ditch's and the little custom red sportscar behind me. It started raining HARD sideways and got my distributor wet along with my MSD box under the dash. It had a lightning storm going on under my dash and running on 4 cylinders, plus the sportscar had NO side windows so he was getting SOAKED. We were about 10 miles out of Guymon looking for a crossroad to turn around and go back. We made it back to Guymon just before midnight and stayed the night. That put us in Amar about 10:30 the next day along with loosing our money at Amar hotel.
      Go ahead, pull my finger.

Tulsa to Ennis last year for sure. Trans got hot and started leaking out the front and spitting fluid on the h-pipe = big smoke cloud. We stopped several times and considered several options, but eventually went with the infamous "diaper trick" and it was fine the rest of the week. Just kept the diaper changed daily and an eye on the fluid level. It really wasn't leaking a lot but was definitely making a mess and smoking things up. Just making it through that first day was like winning.
Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

2007 from WIR to Cedar Falls

Lost, I went over a hump, came down cut the rear brake line with the ARB, next stop I went right thru it. Pulled off what there was of a shoulder ( 8") took the fuel pressure gauge line off put it on the rear brakes borrowed 2 cups of rusty fluid from a Farmer. Doc says I heard a noise we better look, pulled his valve cover off and 1 pushrods gone. He starts calling one of Sonny's builders is like 3 miles up the road. We call they stay late we pulled the motor out totally rebuild it, 2 different head gaskets some camshaft who knows what it was but, back on the road at 2:30 AM only 450 miles to go still. At 5:00 AM his trailer takes off, it broke the trailer hitch off. I drive till I find a Menards and buy a wire welder, it had been butt welded on so we butt welded it back on and hooked the chains to the wheelie bars this time, 3 hours later it broke off again just past the welds so we weld it again. Get to the track with 45 minutes left to go.

Oh,, and all of last year for my Junk!

2009 ( I think) Clark had twisted a drive shaft and when I was waiting at the machine shop for his new one I noticed I had a pinhole leak in my rad. Original 68 rad so why would I expect a problem. I had some powdered aluminum on board so I threw it in and carried on. We left Bowling Green traveling with Clark. Clark was having cooling issues and we stopped somewhere on a freeway at rush hour to let his car cool when I noticed my rad had split the tank seam. When we got off the freeway Clark drove me to Walmart and I bought a torch and some solder and did a bang up roadside repair. No problems for us the next day but Clark broke an axle and had to sleep in the tower that night so we ended up running with the Korth brothers David and Dennis. Everything was going great and David Korth said they were going to make a side trip to Graceland on the way to the motel. Hey what the heck I liked Elvis ( the one that drove Caddies ) and I said to my buddy Wayne we should go too. We rolled up to the gate at Graceland to find it was closed for the day. David backed his Plymouth up to the gate to get a picture and this security guard was having a meltdown. I told him to cool his jets for a few minutes because I planned on the same thing. Ok ,backed my car in and had Wayne stand beside it for a picture. While I was focusing my camera I said " OK big E if you are watching this send me a message from beyond the grave". Well immediately my rad burst spewing hot antifreeze all over the sidewalk. Now what? As I was standing there contemplating my next move this nice lady from the sovenier shop came over and asked if we would like to bring the car in behind her fence. I said thank you no that I just thinking about my next move. She then said to me in a motherly way " either bring it in or get out of here because in a few more minutes you are not going to own this car the Brothers are. Take a look around". Ok folks it was right then I decided mopars can run hot and do not need coolant. I hit the road with the Korth bros hot on my tail. This was all well and good until I realized we were heading deeper into enemy territory. At a T intersection against the light I made a rapid u turn. Apparently David did not want to be left behind but his u turn caused a transit bus to slam on the brakes and take evasive action. We eventually got out of there and lived to tell this tale. Now after all this typing I remember this was not my most memorable drive . It was in 2006 when I ran out of bullets going through Chicago Heights.

Last year was my first time, first trip from Tulsa to Dallas was torture, had fuel issues along with tire rubbing problems the whole way, then almost into Dallas and broke rocker arms. fixed but had no more spares, hung it up at the track. Drove to uhaul and rented a trailer and truck.

Last year my first also and Tulsa to Dallas drive AFTER a transmission change and leaving late (after 8 or so). First time the truck had been over 20 miles with a new engine which happened to be my first BBC build. 13 year old grandson and a crazy grandpa driving Hwy 2 with dim, unadjusted head lights (had overspray on them from the paint). All this following two weeks of almost round the clock thrashing in the shop after a day at school.
Getting to Dallas was a milestone, making the rest of the trip was priceless. Running with "like minded crazies" was icing on the cake.

Ready for 2014, and the truck now has 3000+ miles on it.

Last year was my first year also. I think the Tulsa to ennis leg was pretty memorable. Even though I have owned this car for more than half of my life it's never really been out of Tulsa. Getting to Muskogee was the farthest it had ever been. There's all those noises you hear, and the temp gauge moves a bit and it seems like its going to overheat but it's really only 3* warmer than it was earlier, was that a funny shift? Is the trans to hot? I think the rear end is howling more....etc,etc,etc lol.

I quit hearing the phantom noises and imaginary lifter failures...........on day 6.
