looks great but I will miss the "Holy shit, it's gonna fall on us!" charmed appearance of the old wood.

Yeah......I've decided to just spray foam just my body in November. It will be cheaper, more effective than heating air, and should wear off just about the time summer hits?

You and my wife both. She really liked the way the sun shone through the gaps in the siding (it was pretty, but snow and rain shines through just as easy, not as pretty)

There are still 2 other barns here to enjoy the patina on. Okay, I admit it makes me a little sad too, but I look around and see these old barns disappearing by the buttloads every day, and then it feels like I'm doing the right thing again.

You are in soybean country.. There is a soybean compound tht is avaiable in the midwest (not te rest of the country due to transport costs) and is supposedly better than expanding foam.. Saw it on PBS, it was also about using soybean oil as a hot rod fuel for pullers as well.. Downside is the stuff goes rancid before it is used.. As foam the rancicity was addressed, it is the pre-application that there were problems..
Might be worth looking into.. Expands real good!

If walls are thick enough you could get an R15 easy....maybe some foil face
You can do it yourself and will get the job done

          Super nice job......looking good

Thanks guys. Its been a long time coming and a big deal to us.

I have your parts right here DrWho, they aren't going anywhere. (I finally figured out Tardis, cool!)

The side with the mandoor was done today, and the smaller garage door framed in. That required some creativity with the foundation in that area, but it came out great. Front wall is almost as straight as the others. And that rear slider moves like a feather.

Trim and finish siding the front tomorrow, then overhead doors on Tuesday. Woohoo!

Finished end wall of hay shed.

Nearly finished other end wall. Some trim and soffits left.

The small opening is all framed now. Finish siding and some more trim, then doors. The small opening, we reverse calculated in order to get the door & track as close as possible to the overhead beams, then measure downwards in order to raise the threshold as far as possible. This is as good as it gets, I had planned on a small retaining wall and 2 levels on the front, now I know exactly where they have to go.

Looks Great! that's a TON of work!

Care to share the metal roof paint information? I've replaced a bunch of rubber washer head screws - still have a bunch of leaks.

Just so happens I have the 3 55 gallon barrels and the 8 5 gallon buckets the paint came in......I'll get the info off them for y'all.

Paint a roof, get 3 burn barrels free! Whatta deal!

The company that actually applied the paint is out of Lipseig, and they do a fair amount of work in the Detroit area as well. The way it worked, I get the quote for the whole job from 1 fellow. That fellow delivers the paint, and you pay him for the paint. Then the application guys show up when conditions are appropriate, apply the paint, and then you pay them separately.

So this could also work for your location I believe? Don't see why not?

Wow, 55 gallon drums? We only used 3 or 4 5-gal buckets to paint the roof of the barn at my Grandfather's. We paint it ourselves every 10 years or so. It's probably the same stuff, thick and black until you mix it, then it's thick and silver IIRC.

Yep, 55 gallon drums, 3 of them. Plus the 5 gallon buckets, 8 of them.

Like I said, its thick! Sounds like a similar product though.

Everything appears done and ready for doors when I got home from baseball games tonight. Too dark for pictures.

I kinda liked the rustic look of the old barn before. But, I would be doing the same thing if it was as drafty as you say. Makes it's usefulness very limited to the best weather. The new siding makes it look brand new, but all those big tall walls needs some old billboard signs. Just a thought.

Don't worry, I still have rustic covered. I have twin barns and a baby, see?
