Rather than a conventional tubular frame, this car is based on monocoque stressed skin aircraft type construction that has been used in Formula 1 and Indy type cars for years. Fabrication expert Nye Frank built the one of a kind car in just four months. Inner and outer aluminum and magnesium panels are riveted to a series of integral ribs forming a rigid, boxlike structure or “tub” to which the suspension members are attached. The complete car weighed only 1,845 pounds, about 300 pounds less than Thompson’s highly successful conventional 1969 Mustang Funny Cars.
