1971 Foyt Coyote Indy 500 Racer to Hit the Auction Block This Weekend

1971 Foyt Coyote Indy 500 Racer to Hit the Auction Block This Weekend

With the 2011 Indy 500 rapidly approaching, we got word that one of the neat old cars that competed for glory decades ago is set to be auctioned this weekend. The car in question is a 1971 Foyt Coyote, the long running brand of chassis constructed for AJ Foyt’s USAC and Indy 500 efforts.

This particular car competed in the race in both 1971 and 1972. It has been restored to the form of the 1971, in which Donnie Allison was at the controls. Allison drove the car to a very respectable sixth place finish in that race. For 1972 George Snider, AJ Foyt’s long time friend, and the man who made the most race Coyote chassis outside of Foyt was in the driver’s seat. Snider had a decent ride as well, pulling home 11th place honors, and cashola.

We really like this era of Indy 500 car as it was still a time in the race’s history that innovation and wide open thinking were the rule of the day. Sure, the cars has started to take one a common form at this point, they all still had their own fingerprint.

The car will be sold at the Mecum Spring Classic Auction in Indy, on May 21st.
