Last weekend the NHRA held the first of their two yearly “Four Wide Nationals” at the palatial zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. Some people really dig the idea of four wide racing, especially because it happens just a couple times a year. Other people think it is the worst thing to happen to professional drag racing since Top Fuel was basically turned into a spec class.
The media splash from the first event was pretty huge and it was “good” coverage, meaning that the NHRA got their message run on media outlets far larger than just the typical racing or automotive channels. In talking with all of the hard core NHRA fans we know, and these are guys who follow drag racing like some follow the NFL, they all think it sucks ass and is bad for the sport. The casual fans seem to get a kick out of it.
Us? We just wish they’d allow injected nitro Funny Cars.
TAKE THE POLL BELOW AND TELL US IF YOU LOVE OR HATE NHRA FOUR WIDE DRAG RACING!
Too busy, too much going on. I am an old timer (64) I started at Lions years ago (mid 60s) It also seems this four lane fiasco would have some saftey issues.
no way to see the race you miss th end
Love it and Hate it. Good for qualifing, but I pay to see 4 rounds on Sunday.
I LOVE it! Especially the nitro classes. I do think they need to revise the 7 second “time out” rule when staging because it just takes too much timee for 4 cars to set up for a run.
Just think how quickly a drag race could be completed if they would qualify 16 pro cars and eliminate all but one car in each round of racing. The race would be over in two rounds! Just think how fast that would eliminate all of those pesky stock, super stock, super gas, and super comp cars! It would be a very efficient way to run a race but would be disastrous for food and souvenir sales. Therefore, it will never happen!
I also hate 1,000 racing. It is almost like getting a hard-on but not!!
Whoever thought this was a good idea.
It is as bad an idea as E.T. bracket racing.
Drag Racing as God intended it:
Two Cars – 1320 feet – Heads Up –
Then I’ll know how to vote on it.
I think it is cool as long as it is a once-a-year novelty. I also must say I doubt I would be as interested if I was there watching it on the guardrail instead in a recliner!
