BangShift Question of the Day: What’s Your Favorite Motor?

BangShift Question of the Day: What’s Your Favorite Motor?

With the greatness of that Miller engine we wrote about earlier today still swimming in our heads, we need to do something to get that lump of iron off out mind. While the Miller 91 isn’t our favorite engine, it is certainly one we respect and are awed by. Today we want to know what your favorite horsepower generator is.

From workaday four bangers in econoboxes and forklifts to romping, stomping mountain motors in drag race cars, there are about as many different engines out there as there are gearheads to wrench on them. The engine can be used as a statement of purpose (a blown Hemi in your altered) or as jewelry for a car (multi-carb Olds engine in a rat rod), or as a nod to technology (an LS-series engine in a 1950s Buick).

Motors cause controversey in all genres of the gearhead world. Some contain illegal parts in racing, some break the “rules” in show cars, and some cross brand lines, infuriating purists.

This is an easy one!

What’s your favorite engine and why?

    I’m a Mopar guy,so I’m supposed to say 426 Hemi,right?440 Six Pack?.I’ve never owned,or driven,either.Not that I wouldn’t LIKE to.My Dad had a 440 4 speed ’70 Charger R/T,but I never DROVE it.It was brutal,but I might’ve weighed 70lbs,and I’m sure the G forces were different!When I bought my ’73 ‘Cuda 340,I had big block plans before I ever heard it run.Now that 340 is built mean and backed by a 4 speed.But currently I’m driving my ’69 383 torqueflight Charger,everyday!That thing should play drums because it doesn’t miss a beat!383 was the engine most Chrysler engineers specified for use in their own vehicles..so until I get that 440!

Being a Ford truck guy and a fan of big cubic inches, my obvious choice is the Ford 460. Torquey, tough, plentiful, and lots of aftermarket support. My second choice would have to be the 12valve Cummins 6bt. I just love the diesel sound, smell, and torque. Power potential is also a huge plus!

Back in 64 I had a 34 Ford tudor and the flathead was so bad that we ran 90 wt. gear lude in it to have oil pressure and the bearings were so lose the pistons actually hit the heads. This helped seal the rings. That motor was still running when my father made me get rid of it for to many speeding tickets. So I must say flathead fords rule.

292 six. When I was looking for one I tracked down about a thousand people who had one, none turned out to be one. I explained the right motor mount, they all were certain theirs was a 292.

    SOHC 427
    BOSS 9′
    Novi V8
    Offie 4

Oh wait, you said engine, as in one lol.

Thats like picking your favorite child

No surprize here, the 351 Cleveland 4 barrel. Only produced for 4 years and now a bit of a dinosaur which makes them all the more unusual in a sea of Windsors.

How about the Rolls Royce Merlin. Twelve cylinders on a 60 degree block. Overhead valve 1600+ cubic inches. A Reno Air Race favorite. To hear one at a large power setting can’t be described!!

#1: Buick V6 of all generations
    #2: Buick Nailhead
    #3: Buick 430/455

Non Automotive, definately the Napier Deltic!

    Yeah I’m a Buick nut.

  9. JRoberts

    Studebaker R2 or R3
It is different, can be made to put out decent horsepower, oh did I mention different?

Next would be the twin OHV Offy engines used in the sprint and Indy cars. Those engines just look cool. I believe they were in something like 27 Indy 500 winners.

Broken record here: Jeep 4.0 HO I6. I tend to gravitate toward oddball stuff anyway, but if you’ve never driven one, you’ll be amazed.

  11. Robert MacConnell

    AMC 401.
I actually had one in a Gremlin. It was backed by a TorqueFlite and a Ford 9″ TracLok with 4.11’s
That car was the most fun ever. Many a GM/Ford/Mopar jockey suffered humiliating defeat at the hands of that monster!
