BangShift Question Of The Day: Classic Or Modern? Which Is Your Favorite Kind Of Wheel?

BangShift Question Of The Day: Classic Or Modern? Which Is Your Favorite Kind Of Wheel?

Almost a year ago Brian wrote a BangShift Question of the Day that asked “What’s The Coolest Wheel Ever?”. The results are what most of us would expect, and include all the classics. But we all know that trends come and go, and hot rodders tastes change because of when they grew up or got into hot rodding. For example, I saw a couple of Pro Street cars at Pleasanton this weekend and they had old school Centerlines on one and Weld Superlites on the other. And the best part? They looked perfect with them, and we all know someone who has a set or two, like me.

But when it comes to surveys, the classic 5 spoke like a Torq Thrust is always up top. That’s why companies for decades have been building new versions of 5 spoke wheels, like Rocket’s Booster.

On the other side of the fence are those guys who are taking very modern designs and putting them on muscle cars and hot rods. The Pro Touring crowd is especially fond of this, partly because of the low weight of modern style wheels, and partly because the large sizes they are now running.

So what do you think? Modern or Classic? Or Classic in a modern size? You tell us, What is your favorite kind of wheel?

Many a cool car is utterly DESTROYED by the countless tacky modern wheels that someone thoughtlessly excretes within a wheel-well.

Agree with Jerry. Classic styles but a bit bigger diameter gives a better chance at using modern tire technology

    It just depends.

    Overall…classic in smaller dia.

    Sometimes, modern in larger dia…

it all depends on the car

I like both. It’s all about getting the right wheel for the right car. Everything from steelies and dog dishes to uber expensive Forgelines in wide by huge sizes.

    Classic car = classic wheels
    Modern car = modern wheels

I typically hate anything bigger than a “16 on an old car.

    Anything over 15″ is a waste 🙂

    I dig Cragar’s SS…….look on most anything.
Have had ’em on my last two rides.

Like much of the Rocket offering as well.

MiniLite style wheels are the best on anything old or even late model. They even look good in larger sizes.

I don’t think there’s ONE right wheel. Each car with it’s different style needs it’s own wheel, sometimes it’s big modern wheels, sometimes it’s old school stuff, sometimes it’s a mix of both.
It’s like asking what color is right for a car, some need shine, some need stripes, some need candy.
