BangShift Daily Tune Up: Paul Revere And The Raiders – Judge (1969)

Here’s one straight out of the Pontiac marketing department in 1969! We’ve featured several tunes by Paul Revere and the Raiders before, among them was SS396, their ode to the 1966 Chevelle. This song was commissioned by Pontiac for use in their television commercials and other marketing stuff when they released the legendary GTO Judge. There’s some neat footage of the car cruising on the salt flats with Paul Revere and the boys jumping around in their colonial uniforms and hamming it up.

Upon conception, the GTO Judge was going to be a stripper, lightweight street killer on the order of the Plymouth Road Runner. By the time the guys at Pontiac had gotten done with it, the stripper and lightweight parts were out the window. The cars were certainly capable performers and lots wore my favorite color of all time, Carousel Red. The Judge is still a legendary muscle car, but never had the street cred that 440 six pack and Hemi Road Runners had in their heyday.

This song runs through all the mechanical goodness that was packed into the Judges and is pretty catchy. From what we understand, the band reworked another song with the Poncho-centric lyrics to make this happen. We’re sure the dollar signs of encouragement from GM were pretty enticing!
