BangShift Daily Tune Up: SS396 — Paul Revere and The Raiders (1965)

Paul Revere and the Raiders were one of the great bands of the 1960s whose style morphed and changed throughout the decade. This song, an ode that was bought and paid for by Chevy as a promotional tool for the SS396 Chevelle is awesome because it is super catchy, poppy, and has just enough muscle car lingo in it to be fun. Obviously crafted to help sell cars by telling kids what the features and high points were of the hairy big block A-body, the song gets right to it with the line, “Forget about your Hemis and your GTOs…”. We love this stuff.

This isn’t the only tune that a Big Three automaker funded to help move cars as Jim Wangers and his team at Pontiac also got into the game with their song GeeeTo Tiger sung by the fake band, “The Tigers” in the middle 1960s as well. We think it is great marketing and one of the first examples of trying to have your message go “viral” by getting kids to buy and spin the record.

Press play below and listen to Paul Revere tell the world how he’ll, “Pass you on the drag strip and you’ll know darn well that you’ve been beat by a porcupine V8 Chevelle”!
