BangShift Tune-Up: A Metal Lesson In How To Drive A Stick!

The best theft deterrent system for cars in the United States: A manual transmission! HAHAHA…oh, wait. Nevermind, that’s true. And sad. The days of rowing your own are fading out, with manufacturers abandoning ship in favor of dual clutches or automatics on the premise of “but they shift faster than you ever could!” And they aren’t wrong. That doesn’t mean they are more enjoyable. (I’ve got several analogies to compare this with, but due to BangShift’s family-friendly nature, I have to pass on sharing them.)

Anyone who has gone through the gears and has nailed every shift knows the satisfaction that comes with it. Dropping a gear to disappear is one of the most awesome sensations you can experience without needing a racing license. And there are people out there who want to learn. They’ve seen Vin Diesel go through the Eaton Roadranger box in his Dodge Charger and have thought to themselves, “That looks badass! I need to learn that!”

Well, if you have a headbanger in the family who needs some lessons on how to get started on rowing the gears, we have a solution for you. Bless (or blame) YouTube for this one…it’s a lesson on starting out on your first trip with a manual-trans car. You won’t walk away as proficient as Ronnie Sox after this. You’ll probably be lucky to turn your head after all of that headbanging. But the technique is solid and who knows…maybe the entertainment factor might encourage younger drivers to give three pedals a shot.

    I did have a AE-86 GTS 5 speed with a LSD.

    Right now I am selling my F-450 so my last manual is going away. it’s a ZF-6. for the Wimps in F-350’s that one more gear then you could order. Low + 4+ Overdrive. Rewind is next to Low.

    I don’t even recall what I learned on anymore. I have drove many different 3,4,5 6, & 7 speeds. Split rear axle trucks too.

    I have Grumpy Jinkens Shifted a NV4500 in a 95 3500HD jerrdan 10Kboom/4k wheel lift 84 inch cab to axle with a 6.5TD and left a Honda civic that was trying by car lengths.

    My 87 Cavalier Z245 speed I could slip the clutch at idle and get it to move. Then shift up and down 1st to 5th and 5th to first clutch less. 2014 I drove a Plymouth 4 cylinder sundance 5 speed for a while. I could go up clutch less and 4 to 3 clutch less. I drove a few 89-92 Ford F-superduty 6.9L non turbos with ZF 5 speeds that I could go totally clutch less in. they were so worn out that if the truck would roll at a stop light I could pop it in first and never touch the clutch.

    I also know the joys of 9Kplis Toyota 4AG revving before shifting the exciting 14 second modified corolla GTS. They aint that fast bone stock.

    When it comes to pulling things a manual with a Low gear beats an automatic. Even the 4l80E does not have the same ratio as a SM420/SM465 or a NV4500. Does not matter even with a transfer case in low you still not going to match a 4wd manual with low.

    4 bangers and V6 cars never ever get as good of mileage with a automatic as they did with a manual, at least anything made before 2005. The manuals all had lower first gear ratios, some had a lower final drive ratio. Then they had more percentage of over drive. Example 96 Camaro 3.8L v6 T-5 0.63 vs 4l60-e (th700r4) 0.70 the V8 cars 6 speed was 0.50 6th gear.

    Small trucks like the early s-10s and the early rangers the first few years were non of 4 speeds with 1:1 four, they still got better miles per gallon then the automatics. Then when the 5 speeds came out in them they did better then the automatics with over drive. Drive 2 back to back one auto one manual with the same engine. You can feel the pep difference.

    if my Explorer had a 6 speed ZF behind the 302 it would really be a beast. that and if I finally get some twisted wedge heads and get rid of the GT-b or ‘gt-40-b ‘ heads the fan boys tell me they are. plus I need to put a bottle bracket in, lines, n2o injectors… then shoot the stock power of a Honda in to the engine.
