BS Tune-Up: “Propane Nightmares” by Pendulum (2008) – Plus Supersonic Bombers!

Let’s first focus not on the song, but the aircraft in this video. All three of these swept-wing, fire-breathing supersonic bombers have looks, have power and have frightening capability, and all three have been tested in war. You are probably most familiar with the Rockwell B-1 Lancer, America’s four-engined strategic heavy supersonic bomber. First seen in the 1970s, the aircraft didn’t actually make it into service until the mid-1980s, and is still currently supporting operations. The next aircraft you’ll see is the similarly-shaped Tupolev Tu-160. Known in Russia as Belly Lebed (White Swan) due to it’s anti-flash white paint, it’s better known by the NATO code-name “Blackjack”. Similar to the B-1 in shape, the Blackjack is a bit bigger and faster, and has a longer range. Then you have the Tupolev Tu-22M “Backfire” strategic bomber, a Mach 1.6 mover that looks more like a gigantic MiG-25 with it’s slanted intakes. Russian or American, these are the loud and fast aircraft, the heavies, the dream assignments for pilots. For us, it’s all about the afterburner, baby. It’s cool to see that torch-like flame burning out of a fighter, but when you see an aircraft the size of a B-1 screeching down the runway with all four engines lit off, you’ll understand.

Now, for the song. Pendulum is an Australian drum ‘n bass/electronic rock band. Don’t start twitching just yet…yes, there’s electronic composures (usually through singer Rob Swire’s guitar-like MiDi controller) but there are also real instruments like drums, bass guitar and electric guitar. Consider it a decent hybrid of electronica and rock, mainly the speed and noise of it all. The actual video for “Propane Nightmares” focuses on two people trying to escape a cult…but that won’t work here. Bombers, afterburners and music? Much better.
