BangShift Project Files: A 1971 Dodge D100 For A First Truck

I remember my first car. I remember bragging my ass off about a rotted-out ’76 Camaro that looked like Old Bumblebee on meth. I remember pulling the carpet out of the car and seeing the grass I was parked on through the floor. I remember that the 350 and four-speed worked, right up until they were donated for another cause. And I remember the day I came home from school and learned that my “shitbox deathtrap” of a Camaro had been sent to the crusher. Ah, memories…

Joe Haber, Jr. is on a much better path than I was with my first car. His dad, Joe, has been a BangShifter since the beginning, and the fun that he’s experienced with his 1966 Plymouth Fury has been well-documented over the years. So, when Joey had the money pooled together to get a first car, he decided to go for an older ride, and after a little Craigslist hunting, the two came up with this 1971 Dodge D100.

Is it pretty? Nope. According to Joe, “It runs like shit, it shifts like shit and it stops like shit but for the price I paid (not the asking price) and the overall condition I couldn’t pass it up.” Considering that the Dodge was listed for $1500, it’s completely understandable. The truck is a 318/auto, and there’s work to do before this truck is terrorizing anything but small animals crossing the road, but for a first vehicle, this is a damn good one. As far as project threads go, the truck has only been around for a few days, but pay attention and watch as the father-and-son duo work on, clean up, cuss out and enjoy this old truck.

    I see potential.
    Lots of potential.
They could just cobble this thing back to working order for the time being while building up a higher output 360 to drop in later, it would be fantastic.

    Outstanding first truck.
Option 1: 94-98ish junkyard 360 magnum and a gun rack
Option 2: 12 valve Cummins and a gun rack

Either way you win. Good luck and keep us posted.
