Carbon Fiber EVERYTHING: The Callaway Corvette GT3-R Is FIA Legal And Ready To Do Battle

Putting the word “Callaway” in front of the word “Corvette” has this magical property that transforms the General’s two-seat wonder car from a completely obtainable daily driver into the kind of ride that evokes fear and a few dozen expletives every time the driver hits the throttle. That’s nice for street cars, but the same company goes racing. Care to imagine what that bit of fun looks like? Here’s the latest and greatest out of Callaway Competition, the Corvette C7 GT3-R. Designed by Canadian designer Paul Deutschman, the C7 GT3-R looks absolutely menacing in bare carbon fiber form, as if it should be parked next to a 911 GT3R with it’s engine idling in the pits at Circuit de la Sarthe, waiting for the Porsche to make a noise so it can attack. And while Callaway have been fairly quiet about what exactly is going on in this dark beast, the 600 horsepower LS2, six-speed Xtrac sequential transmission and minimal weight will give many a racer, Porsche included, a headache to remember.

Callaway stated via their press release, “We wanted to set another milestone in our company’s history with our new design, developing and constructing a future-proof vehicle that will be produced from 2016 and used for many years to come. As a small, privately owned team lacking the finances and human resources of the big automotive groups, we knew from the outset that approaching a project of this magnitude would be very daring. Therefore, first and foremost, we have to thank our employees and partners who have made it possible to finally set the C7 GT3R on its wheels. Everyone has given more than 100% and we truly can’t thank them enough. We can be proud of our performance to date and are confident we will be rewarded with good results in the many races ahead.”
