Is There Anything Better Than Watching A 1966 Chevy Impala Going Wheels-Up At Launch? We Don’t Think So…Check This Out!

Is There Anything Better Than Watching A 1966 Chevy Impala Going Wheels-Up At Launch? We Don’t Think So…Check This Out!

You can blame this video on my personal affinity for a black 1965 Impala that ran in NMCA’s Super Street category years ago: Nick Scavo’s Impala, nicknamed “Orca”. Between the occasional shot on TNN or on ESPN and all of the pictures of the car nose-high in magazines, that big mother was one of my favorites growing up, simply because it did what it needed to do: run hard. It’s part of the reason why I enjoy finding the oddball cars at a race: making a Camaro or Mustang run the number is cool and all, but taking a two-ton sled and getting it to stand on the bumper is just badass, I don’t care who you are or what you think at that point.

The owner of the red Impala is Eric Grace. Eric has owned the car for 36 years and is the second owner of the car, having bought the original 396 machine from the first owner after he had seen it while working a paper route. That 396 is now in safekeeping and in it’s place is a Steve Schmidt-build 622ci bullet that has enough grunt. Don’t bother asking how much…if it can yank the wheels on a heavy Chevy like this one and keep them in the air for 300′, there’s plenty of horsepower under the hood. The car is on stock suspension at both ends and runs a 10.5″ tire out back.
