This 1972 Ford LTD Is Near Perfection! Embrace The More Mature You The Right Way!

“You always have a hot rod, or some hopped-up beater. Even that Chrysler you have is a joke, it’s like you took Grandpa’s car and stuck NOS on it. You need to grow the **** up and get a more mature car.”

Three seconds after I finished reading that text from a family member, I was fit to be tied. It’s been no secret to anybody in my family that I was going to be a gearhead. Anyone who was surprised that I’d want a fast, loud car that I would enjoy driving must’ve finally come down from whatever they had been smoking. But the individual in question has no excuse…a “mature car”. What the hell does that even entail? What is an immature car? Ok, I can probably answer that one: the beat up SN95 era Mustang that is constantly revving and fishtailing from right turns, or the stickered-up fifteen year old Corolla, or the Honda that has charms hanging off and puffs smoke at every shift. Yeah, those qualify as immature cars. But what would a mature car look like? I went to eBay to figure that out.

This 1972 Ford LTD makes a case for itself nicely. Ignore the wheels, but look at the car overall: nice dark color, well optioned, roomy, and doesn’t display power. Those five-spoke mags would have to go, but a set of wide steelies with Ford’s pie-pan hubcaps would look absolutely spot-on. Nobody has to know that there’s a 400ci Ford mill underhood. The automatic would reduce temptation of acting like an ass behind the wheel. Maybe. This doesn’t scream “boy racer”. This suggests quiet power, a taste for something more. Or maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for black on chrome, and that trunk would easily hold the offending idiot in it’s cavernous hold.

The more I imagine this LTD parked next to a beat up 2004 Kia Optima, the more I’m liking it.

I’d roll that any day all day, nice little cruiser for the money. (be awful tempted to leave her lookin as is but upgrading the engine and trans to something more modern, powerful, and fuel efficient too)

Those cars, if equipped with automatic temperature control, were a bit of a MF’er. One night, back in high school, I didn’t make it past the ID check at a particular night spot. I was thus relegated to looking after the car, a 1972 LTD. While my friends were having a few adult beverages, I was trying to figure out the heater in said Ford ( a twin to the above, in blue). It was February. In Alberta. I managed to get the automatic temperature control to blow full cold.
As I did, the radio announced the temp as MINUS 33. That’s 65 fahrenheit degrees of freezing.
I became considerably less a Ford enthusiast that night.
