Wasn’t Expecting Nines: This Twin-Turbocharged Late-Model Mustang Runs Hard!

Wasn’t Expecting Nines: This Twin-Turbocharged Late-Model Mustang Runs Hard!

Straight off of the showroom floor, the new Mustang GTs are runners: they will easy sit right on the 13.0 quarter mile line all day long in stock form, and if you optioned gears deeper than 3.73, played with the exhaust, or bolted a set of drag radials up and really let the Coyote eat, twelves aren’t too far off of the mark. So by default, calling a 2016 Mustang GT a sleeper isn’t quite right…it is plenty of car, especially for the money, and will get the job done. Honestly, if it looks stock, expect low twelves and hope there isn’t a power adder, because if there is, the scene will probably look a little more like what you’ll see this red car do. This Mustang has a Hellion twin-turbocharger setup…it runs twin 55mm snails into the Coyote, and if it weren’t for the trackside wheel and tire setup and the small “twin turbo” badge on the fenders, most people wouldn’t clue in until the blow-off valve gave the final warning during the burnout. At that point, it’s too late to do anything but pray…

It’s strange, the local all Ford day here has a pile of new pure stock Mustangs that all run mid 14’s. The modded ones do better of course. I’ve yet to see untouched p/s break out of 14’s… Reminds me of the ’60’s when the factory’s would send “ringers” to the Mag’s for their road tests. That is what I love about drag strips, the truth gets laid bare.
