If there is one thing that Chrysler did well in the 1980s and 1990s, it was building two-door body shells that looked great as drag cars. The Daytona, the LeBaron Coupe and the first-gen Avenger all look great as full-kit race machines. The real deals are what they are, but I much prefer them converted and packing eight cylinders. The Avenger, especially, was a disappointment when it finally debuted in the mid-1990s: replacing the Daytona, it was supposed to be a leap forward in the right direction. Instead, it was a lengthened Mitsubishi Eclipse that didn’t even run like one. I might be more inclined to forgive the car for not having a V8 if it did come with the 4G63 and all-wheel-drive, but instead it was saddled with sad-sack four and six cylinders and front wheel drive. Fail. But that doesn’t mean that racers have ignored the likes of the Avenger. Take, for example, this Super Pro Avenger that was running the quarter during the 2014 Chrysler Power Classic at National Trails Raceway. Between this car and the IROC race bodies, tell me again why Chrysler refused to make this thing rear-drive and potent. This Avenger is badass. The Avenger that Dodge sold was sorry by comparison.
