Old camper rigs are one of the stranger things we dig here at the offices, the more obscure the better. I wish I could better explain the “why” behind that…I get wanting one of those GMC motorhomes from the 1970s or an old Flxible bus conversion, but when we get to a creation such as this, I’m left a bit baffled, so maybe one of you readers can help me out here. Alone, the 1963 Dodge D400 is a cool rig, sporting 318 Poly power and a four-gear manual. The heavy-duty look of the D400 sells itself, doesn’t it? You simply don’t see trucks like this that could be started and driven much anymore. But the flatbed is occupied by an Avion camper shell that has all of the amenities you could need, including a sink, fridge, range, and a toilet. We imagine it’s room for two at most in the camper, but that’s just a suspicion.

So what do you need to know about an old truck with a camper on the back if you’re searching with a five-grand max budget? Well, for starters, you better start steeling yourself up for negotiations, otherwise you are going to spend your entire knot of money on this Dodge. You’ll be getting a rig that can double as a domicile, so not all hope is lost. But you might want to do something about the floor around the toilet. Is an old camper truck that has classic lines and a top speed that might be safe for a back highway nowhere close to an Interstate the itch you need to scratch? If not, you might want to look elsewhere, but if you’ve gotta have it, your home away from the rest of the world sits waiting.
