Mail’s Here! This Gasser-Style 1979 AM General DJ-5 Is Pretty Neat And Certainly Unique!

The good old Mail Jeep…no matter how long it’s been since the United States Postal Service retired them, I still smile when I see one somehow still toddling along. Yeah, it boils down to nothing but nostalgia, but it’s the good kind of nostalgia…good memories and memorable styling, something that the Grumman LLV won’t have when they finally get retired out. And until we see an LLV that is sporting a high-winding small-block where the Iron Duke was originally placed, we are going to take this particular 1979 DJ-5 every day of the week.

From the listing: “The Jeep starts, runs, drives, steers, shifts and stops fantastically. It drives straight and true and literally drives with 1 finger. All lights work perfectly and are clear and bright! All 3 door locks work properly, and are keyed alike. All glass is EXCELLENT with NO rock chips or cracks. All doors open and close smoothly with no binding. The transmission is smooth and positive shifting. This little custom cruiser gets 25 MPG! (factory 151 ci iron duke 2.5L with 3 speed auto transmission) With its cool patina paint, custom suspension, aluminum front tank, and 1 of a kind style, you are GUARANTEED to never see another one like it! And for $5,500 you are never going to buy a: great running, completely custom, unique, and STRAIGHT classic car. You can drive THIS Jeep all week to work and back, and to your favorite cruise night on Saturday! Try THAT with other $5,500 vehicles. Not going to happen. Or, you can put the mail tray back in and deliver mail in this right hand drive rhd postal jeep. It’s route ready! Are you a big chunky-chunk? No sweat; these doors offer tremendous ease of access. And with 3 super air-sucking vents, you can pull in a serious amount of fresh air. The doors lock in the open or closed positions, so you can cruise down the highway with a fantastic open-air feeling.”

Do you like open-air motoring? Like the idea of driving something you won’t see on the road everyday, or something that will make just about everybody pay attention to you? Are you a “chunky-chunk” that has bad memories of trying to fit into a T-bucket? Then here you go…just slide those doors back, plant yourself in the absolutely anonymous flat bucket seat and off you go! The AMC inline-four and automatic aren’t going to raise your blood pressure with their performance, but they won’t let you down, either, and that is awesome in it’s own right. Or you could go ahead and drop that supercharged little number in, beef up the rear axle, and proceed to frighten children and the elderly as you cruise down Main, handing out pamphlets that announce that “The End Is Near!”

  1. Chevy Hatin\\\' Mad Geordie

    What no LS?

That\’s about the only redeeming feature of this slow and scruffy \”gasser\” that would struggle to crack a 20 second quarter mile….
