Money No Object: A Nearly Perfect, Low Mile, Manual Trans 1974 Jeep Cherokee!

Money No Object: A Nearly Perfect, Low Mile, Manual Trans 1974 Jeep Cherokee!

American Motors knew to not mess up a good thing when they got the Jeep brand. They put AMC emblems here and there, supplied powertrains, and that was mostly that…you do not mess with success. American Motors saved money that they didn’t have by not creating new vehicles for the Jeep brand, and watched as they rolled out the door…CJs, FSJs and Commandos all left Toledo under American Motors’ watch and for the most part, stayed true to the overall Jeep mission of function first, fashion second.

We like a good FSJ around here, and when we saw this orange 1974 Jeep Cherokee, we just about went weak in the knees. Why? Easy: two door full-size Cherokee, AMC 360ci V8, manual trans, rubber floors, as old-school as a sport-utility vehicle can get. If you bemoan overstuffed luxury ‘utes that are sold today, this is your happy place right here. Then you get to the real tasty bits: 77,xxx miles on the original engine, original paint, and one-owner. And we don’t doubt that last claim one bit…the green-on-white Washington state plates were in circulation until late 1986, but the version that has “WASHINGTON” embossed instead of screened on ended prior to 1982.

Whoever ordered this truck out was frugal. Bright orange, with rubber floor mats, no radio, and no trim-out makes us think that the original intention of this Cherokee was a hunting rig. Except that it appears to have been babied like a long-term investment. The only sad looking part of this Cherokee is the underhood insulation, but after forty-three years, it’s going to look sad. But that’s one item out of a whole full-size Jeep that will have us in fits for a while to come.

    Try orange?

That is really nice, V8/manual very unusual. In that period you got the Dana 44s and open-knuckle front discs, it could be a great daily driver. Add a locker or two and go almost anywhere.
