This 1974 Dodge D300 Flatbed Is Perfection! This Black Beauty Looks Ready To Either Show Or Work!

When it comes to trucks, I am actually pretty easy to figure out: manual transmissions, large V8 or diesel, single-cab, dually, and if possible, a flatbed. I like my trucks ready to work. Nothing against mini-truckers or guys who want their very own muscle truck, but I’m old school in a sense: a truck had better be able to get a job done. I’d rather have a rough-and-rugged beast of a machine that I can chain an engine in the back of without fretting than something pretty that I’m afraid to drive. Not that looking good is a bad thing, but if I have to pick between looks and capability, looks loses out every last time.

But this 1974 Dodge D300 Custom has everything in one package. Just standing outside looking at it, I’m sold. I don’t care if the 360 V8 under the hood has three pistons hanging out of the side of the block, it’d be worth every penny I’d pay. The early D-series Dodge trucks are classically handsome, with just enough hints of early 1970s Mopar flavorings. The flatbed and headache bar just add on to the work-capable nature of the truck…sure, with a long dually bed on the back, this D300 would be ready to show at the Mopar Nats, but I wouldn’t be scared to use that flatbed as designed, either.

A former fire truck that received an excellent restoration, the interior belies the Dodge’s true nature: there’s just a vinyl seat, one wheel, three pedals, items that I have no idea what the hell they are for, and a radio-delete plate. You didn’t need tunes, you needed to keep your mind on the task at hand, part of which was paying attention to the 360 to know when to shift the four-speed manual, since there is no tachometer to tell you when. Is that luxury something you don’t think you can live without? Then move along to the next truck. But if you remember when riding in the truck was a big deal because you were “working”, not cruising with Dad, then this Dodge is the rig for you.

I’ve seen an almost identical Dodge that had been converted to a hydraulic operated dump bed that ran off a modified power steering package.
