Rough Start: Hunting In The Big Apple

Rough Start: Hunting In The Big Apple

New York City is one of those places that intimidates the hell out of someone who has never been there. Rough streets, angry people who pride themselves on their resilience through about anything life can throw at them, traffic that is the closest thing to downtown Cairo, Egypt that the U.S. has to offer. And of course, it’s right on the Atlantic Seaboard and gets a ton of snow. I went in blind, not sure what to expect. Other than the typical collection of beaters I wouldn’t go near for any amount of money and the shell of a 1971 ‘Cuda with a very questionable past, I wasn’t finding much and was actually getting ready to find a new location when this Camaro popped out.

$2500 for a ’82 Camaro, even with a V8, requires some serious looking and justification. The seller claims the 350 and automatic are recent rebuilds, which helps some. There is an aftermarket cowl hood and it appears that 89-91 ground cladding and possibly nose have been added. The Monte Carlo N91 wheels look good on here. There is also interior work that has been done. The body looks clean enough, though if it were us, we’d be underneath the car checking everything.

If the car passes the checks, then we’d use the $2500 left over and get this thing painted one color, and if the transmission is a 3-speed auto, the conversion to an overdrive. Or maybe a manual.

Nice find. I am enjoying the series, amazing what you can find if you spend a little time and work at it.

Smart move checking underneath. My last 2 9C1’s (bought both in NJ) looked perfect on the surface but were swiss cheese underneath after a few years of ownership.

    Haggle on the price!
