The Driver Almost Took a Formula 3 Car to the Face at a Crazy Macau Grand Prix Corner

While much of social media has been abuzz with Laurens Vanthoor winning the GT3 World Cup at the Macau Grand Prix by sliding across the start-finish line upside-down, the headlining open-wheel race at Macau had its own insanity. The Formula 3 World Cup mostly features up-and-coming formula-car racers on the narrow, winding course around the island of Macau. The race is manic and tempting; many of the parts of the track that look like passing opportunities leave nothing but treachery and pain. Even just making a tiny mistake can have disastrous results, as seen on Lap 1 of the Qualification Race.

At just one corner (about 0:45 into the video), three consecutive drivers carry just a tiny bit too much speed through the final corner. That extra bit of momentum carries them all the way to the outside of the corner, where three cars in a row all smack the black-and-yellow Armco barrier. When one driver far to the right in a yellow car slows to avoid the pile-up, another car behind drives over the back of and goes airborne. The airborne car nearly comes down on the yellow car’s driver’s head. It’s an insanely close near miss and a still another reminder that Macau might be the craziest street circuit in the world.
