Craigslist Find: A 2006 “Custom One-Of-A-Kind” Car -TRANSLATION – 2006 WTF?

There are lots of days when I go outside, see the Caprice and think, “Man, you are a total weirdo.” Then I get tipped off to stuff like this creation and suddenly, I am as normal as a guy putting the screws to a 1969 Camaro. A boxy 1980s Caprice is as right as rain when compared to this machine which is listed as a “2006 Custom One-Of-A-Kind Car” and it could be yours for the asking price of $5,000.

According to the seller, the frame is similar to a full sized GM frame but has been fully customized. Power comes from a 377ci small block Chevy built with torque and mid-range power in mind. That engine seems to sit directly between the driver and passenger “pods” that are designed to fit someone who is 5′ 10″ and apparently pretty trim judging by the width of the space you’d be entering….without using a door. As you can see there are some small speakers mounted out in the breeze, Auto Meter gauges appear to be providing the info to the driver, there appear to be two spare tires mounted on the rear deck portion of the car and there’s a strange stand like piece hanging off the back that we can visualize Darth Vader hanging onto as this slowly rolled him to some unknown destination. Maybe that’s where the groceries go…we have no idea.

Here’s the text of the ad in case it gets flagged or this thing sells like we expect it never to –

Custom design that I built, registered as a specially-constructed vehicle in 2006. 37,xxx miles. Reliable daily driver ever since. Powered by professionally-built 377 cu. inch small block Chevy (400 block, 350 crank) tuned for torque and mid-range. Gets 14-15 mpg during daily commute. Edelbrock carburetor. Edelbrock jetting and tuning kit included. My latest project was to install dual Ford EDIS-8 distributorless ignition system. Never completed that, but the coils and Megajolt Lite module (for laptop interface) are all installed and wired, just needed to install crank sensor and 36-1 toothed wheel. All of these parts are included, with many spare EDIS components. Chassis is based on full-size GM, but everything has been modified or fabricated. Structure is all welded and fabricated and extremely rigid. Transmission is 700-R4 overdrive, professionally built. Rear end is GM 10-bolt with 3.23 gears and positraction. Dual charging system with two alternators and three batteries. Dual electric fuel pumps. Rear-mounted radiator. Heaters for both driver and passenger compartments. Note: If you’re much taller than about 5’10”, you may not be comfortable in the driver’s seat (I built it around my body size). New mounted and balanced 275/60-15 Dunlops included for rear, along with various other parts. Government furlough forces sale, must pay off the family car. $5000.00/best offer.

My opinion may not be popular on this one, but I like it.
Right off, it is not a replica of anything (that I know of). It shows some imagination and original thinking. Thumbs up!

If the suspension is “customized GM Fullsized” it probably handles moderately well unless it’s got a really bad combo of springs and shocks for the new weight and distribution.

Hate the execution (looks like a Miami Vice Lambo and an airport tug got into an accident and they put them back together as a single vehicle) but the idea is kinda interesting. Right now it’s like a Redneck LMP, with some work it could be a Dare to be Different LMP with some performance and stylistic merit.

I don’t totally hate this either, kind of like Mad Max meets Batman. The front end is awful and needs a re-do but the rest is strangley kind of cool.

It’s oddball looks are strangely compelling. I can see driving it n summer days just to be weird. It would look good next to the chopped down Caprice.

What might happen if the Grumman LLV (USPS mail truck) design team was turned loose to build a “sports car” for the Postmaster General . . . .

Do they not cover aerodynamics anymore in automotive schools?

On the other hand, there are more than a few old guys who would like for their home squeeze to ride in her own “pod” . .. separated by engine noise and a rushing tunnel of wind . . . .

Another tidbit supporting the “going postal” theory . . . . “Government furlough forces sale.”

  7. Bluecuda340

How come every time I see a project like this I picture it starting as a third gen camaro?

“Government furlough forces sale” From the amount of cash he has in this thing and the driveway i think he gets paid too much anyways.
