Craigslist Find (W/Video): A Custom Built 1978 6×6 Datsun Truck With Buick V6 Power And Magazine History?

In the interest of full disclosure, I’ll tell you that Charles Wickam, one of the ace photographers here at BangShift sent me this link after digging it up on Facebook. Charles is a guy who has struggled for most of his life with a strange addiction to mini-trucks so I am sure he was looking for an old Datsun that he could buy, paint with weird graphics, put bad wheels on, and a bed that is hydraulically actuated that’ll lift, twist, and tilt like was all the rage back in the 1990s mini-truck scene. I can assure you that he was not looking for a 6×6 Datsun, but he found one and dutifully sent it over. For that, I thank him.

This thing has me emotionally conflicted. Part of me wants to like its 1980s goofy-ass charm, part of me wants to hate it because of its 1980s goofy-ass charm. It is hard for me to decide. On the positive side, this is a true 6×6 truck with both rear axles getting power from the motor, it has a “Grand National” V6 in it which has been rebuilt sans turbo and with an Edelbrock 4bbl carb on top. The truck looks to be in good enough shape with no obvious rot issues. It has 1980s paint on it (see two sentences ago for my thoughts on that), chrome wheels, and what look to be 31″ tires.

Should I hate it? Is it cool? Does anyone remember it from the truck mags back then? The seller claims it was in one (or more).

Thanks for the tip on this Charles…and seriously. Seek help for the mini-truck deal.

    Good ol’ Charles, lol.

I bet it has a carb’d 4.1L and they are just calling it a Grand National engine like half the Chevy guys say they have a “Corvette” engine in there Camaro or truck.
