eBay Find: A Forlorn Maverick Drag Car With Good Bones And A Pissed Off Ford 305ci Six Cylinder!

eBay Find: A Forlorn Maverick Drag Car With Good Bones And A Pissed Off Ford 305ci Six Cylinder!

Ford Mavericks are cool as street machines, but truly neat as drag cars. They were used in Pro Stock during the 1970s by many Ford faithfuls and they provide a great platform to build a car around. This particular piece is a 1970 Maverick that was a bracket drag car for years powered by a very angry 305ci Ford inline six. The seller claims that the car went into the 9.90 zone at more than 140mph when it was an active racer. Obviously it has not been on the track in a while and that’s probably why he’s getting rid of it. While the car isn’t anything beautiful to look at right now, it sure seems like a great place to start a project with. It is being sold with the engine and that’s got value on its own.

We’re guessing that the ‘cage will have to be updated to meet current NHRA specs, but the rear end and other hard parts are certainly worth something. The car has fiberglass bumpers, hood, and decklid, and the nose can come off as one piece. An interesting note on the cylinder head on the six is that it is a rare custom piece made by chopping up six individual heads and welding them together. It is of a cross-flow design, which is huge for making big power in a sixer.

The seller is asking $4,000 or a reasonable offer. You could be leaving with this car for somewhere around $3,000 in cash we’d have to bet.

I remember seeing an article in the 70’s in Hot rod or whatever about furnace brazing the head together. Kinda funny in a way because not long after that we had crossflow heads on all Ford 6’s (in Australia) and they’ve been developed to higher and higher levels ever since. Current Ford 6’s can pretty well get up to 1,000 hp with not much more than a bigger turbo – even stock XR6T turbo’s are faster than the V8 models !!
