Stunning eBay Find: A Harley Earl Designed Broadmoor Skyview Cadillac Station Wagon!

Stunning eBay Find: A Harley Earl Designed Broadmoor Skyview Cadillac Station Wagon!

File this one under incredible! We found a guy selling an amazing nd complete looking coach built custom Cadillac station wagon that dates to 1955. The wagon according to the seller was built for the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado and it were used to take guests sightseeing and to shuttle them around when necessary. There are plexi-glass panels in the roof for people to look out of and the conversion into station wagon trim was completed Hess and Eisenhardt for an estimated total cost of nearly $15,000 and we’re talking 1950s money!

The seller mentions that Harley Earl was supposedly involved in the final design of these cars and if that is true, they have some real historic significance. He also states that six were built in 1955 and two more were built in 1956. He has three of the six 1955s and one of the two 1956s. Hess and Eisenhardt was responsible for building all kinds of cars including presidential limos (even the one Kennedy was shot in), ambulances, hearses, and convertible conversions for stuff like Jaguars. Their business is custom coach type work. These big Caddies certainly have some elements of ambulance and hearse to them but they don’t look to be 100% either of those. Ambulances and hearses tend to have taller roof lines to them and often they have a big kick up at the windshield that carries back. These have very stock looking roofs (aside from the glass panels). They have four rows of seats and could haul 12 people around. The weight fully loaded must have been incredible, especially on stock brakes in the mountains. Yikes!

This is a very complete car that would be bitchin’ to see restored and maybe even one of them customized some. We all remember Bryan Fuller’s monstrously cool “Thunder Taker” from SEMA  so the big Cadillac wagon thing isn’t a foreign idea. Hell, we’re sure that Fuller had no idea about these things and he created a wonderfully upscale version with the ‘Taker!

Let’s say Earl and his guys were on the design of these things. Is it at all possible that Earl, or one of the designers on the project could have kept that idea for the glass panels in the roof with him and then gone to work on the Olds Vista Cruiser or Buick Sport Wagons with glass roofs? The thought had to come from somewhere, right?

The massive Broadmoor is still very much in business and retains the classical style of a mountain resort that these Cadillacs would have served. You can pony up a couple hundred bucks a night and stay there yourself, but the sight seeing tour isn’t going to be anywhere near as cool as it was when these big guys were in service!

Awesome find, but I’m thinking that a full-on resto of one of those things would have a cost on par with, say, restoring a B-36 to airworthy status.
