Best Of BS 2015: The Most American “V8 Interceptor” We Could Find

(This Javelin-turned-V8 Interceptor was easily one of this year’s most talked about eBay finds of this year. It’s not like Australian Falcons are common in the States, so creativity is a must. -McTaggart)

With apologies to Stacey David and his “V8 Interceptor” Mercury Cougar project, we think we have located the most all-American version of the famed black coupe from the Mad Max series yet. AMC fans: don’t shoot the messenger…we didn’t build it, we’re just showing it to you. Here it is, and it could be yours: The Mad AMX V8 Interceptor.

The V8 Interceptor is actually a fairly difficult car to duplicate here in the states…namely because the 1973-76 Ford Falcon XB platform is an Aussie-only deal, and because most of the Falcons that have made their way to the U.S. are treasured pieces. Now, there is a way around that: a 1970-71 Ford Torino looks close enough in body that a nose job and some cosmetic work would do, but in this case, the base car is a 1972 AMC Javelin that went under the knife. It’s a muscular car in it’s own right, but when it comes to portraying the V8 Interceptor…well, you can come to your own decisions on that.

mad amx3From the ad: The nose is handcrafted out of metal, the signature gold headlight covers were ordered online and are correct. There are working headlights behind covers. New aluminum radiator, new hoses and thermostat, new waterpump. The motor is a brand new GM 350 from JEGS and i do have the reciepts. Motor is stock specks, with about 400 miles since install. New harmonic balancer, high output 1 wire alternator, HEI Ignition, stock intake with brand new quadrajet from Mountain Man. Runs great! has stock exhaust manifolds. The blower is a real 671 hollowed out body with a replica Scott Injection hat scoop. It sits on a custom frame above the motor, blower is not functional. The front brakes are custom Scarebird disc brake kit. (no rear brakes) All the frontend springs, shocks, rubber bushings, and ball joints are all brand new,The Paint is satin black with custom Australian Red Dirt Patina stain. It will not wash off, looks amazing in person!!The exhaust is all new movie accurate with glasspacks and all 8 pipes operate. (sounds mean) The transmission is an turbo 350 with a tranny cooler. The interior is stripped to the basics and the only glass is the windshield.(true road warrior fashion) The ignition is push button with oil and water temp gauges, and tachometer, all wiring is brand new. ,Roll Bar, The rear tanks are for looks and have the aircraft style filler necks. The actual fuel tank is a brand new mustang style tank with new sending unit.

While there will never be confusion between a Falcon XB and a Javelin (no matter if the front fender rolls are now gone), it’s certainly not the biggest atrocity we’ve seen. We’d like to see an honest-to-God blown AMC 401 sit in the engine bay, we’d like rear brakes that work, and because we are sick puppies, we’d like license plates on the car. Because when you have something that looks post-apocalyptic, one of the biggest joys you could possibly get out of it is to drive it in traffic. Just watch the Corollas and crossovers get the hell out of your way!

I would not have done this to a ’72 Javelin, I would at least search for a ’70 -’71 Ford Torino.
Who the hell sells a car without working rear brakes?

yeh cute, nice try. Meanwhile, I’m about to go for a drive in my satin black, 73 351 Falcon XB coupe. Its summer here in Australia, beautiful and warm outside too… no nosecone on mine partly because I cant get hold of one but also because they are a royal pain – had a genuine one on a coupe in the 90’s, driveways and spoondrains are not friends of the nose cone.
